coueschaser3 Report post Posted March 30, 2008 Gila's are cool as heck, i average one or two every year. mostly when im bear hunting. There out there, urban encroachment sucks but most the ones i find are in places that will never be developed. But they are some cool little buggers. Problem is i dang near run over most i come across and end up sacrificing the truck! I know ya aint supposed to touch em but id really doubt a gamey is gonna give me crap for pullin one 50 yards off the road so he dont get smashed. if so i will gladly accept it
josh Report post Posted March 30, 2008 My buddy at the PHS got bit by a Gila last summer and it didn't take long for it to pump some venom in him. He got sick as a dog right away.
crotalus Report post Posted March 31, 2008 Sorry to hear about ya friend josh, I understand that the pain is pretty intense and you're nauseated and sweating like a fool. Not to mention your blood pressure is dropping... but no one in "modern times" has ever died of a gila bite. Not yet anyway. One thing is that gilas don't actively pump venom, it flows from its venom gland into the wound caused by those nasty little teeth that happen to be grooved for a better directed flow. Bulldog grips to boot, once they latch on it can be hard to remove. BTW, did ya know there is a new diabetic med that is based on gila venom. Cousechaser3 that's is mightly respectful of ya, I really hate to accidently kill any venomous herp. and actively avoid them as well. I rescued one down south during Oct muley hunt, took it off the road and dodged cars in the process. People thought I was some freak or something. Here's a warning, it's illegal to harass, capture, etc any Gila Monster. So you could get tagged by a AGF officer... sometimes it's difficult to tell a poacher from a good sammie. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 2, 2008 I DID IT!!!!! I BROKE THE CURSE!!!! I saw my first Gila Monster today! I was making a delivery WAY up the Catalinas ( the house that sits on THE VERY TOP of Ventana Canyon. Scary drive!) When this guy walked out infront of me not 100 yards from her front door. So I jumped out of the truck and snapped some pictures!

crotalus Report post Posted April 4, 2008 Yee Haw! Ata baby... those things are sweet. Congrats on "breaking the curse", at first I was think'n azpackhorse had it right but ya mentioned Ventana Canyon and the scary drive up "the window" and I know of personally that there are several Gilas up there. Brother-in-law ran into them whilest building some of them sweet homes up there; he had to drive a cement pump rig up there and he mention the creepy ride up there and seeing Gilas off the road. Sweet going, thanx sharing the pix.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 5, 2008 While I was driving up there, I had though about getting a cement truck up there, let alone a pump! I used to test concrete( ACI certified baby!) Man that sure would be a scary drive in one of those big rigs! I was actually in our smallest truck, and I was VERY please that I was in that one, instead of one of our 35' bobtails!
