Monster

Recommended Posts

Came across this little feller while hiking on Saturday. By far the biggest one I have seen.

That's awesome! I haven't seen one yet this spring. I sure hope to. Last year I spent a day helping a biologist track the gila monsters that were radio taggged. Unfortunately, they were mostly deep in their burrows, so we only saw the head of one in his burrow.

We usually have 2-3 around the office every year, but then I work in the rural part of Tucson too. Last year we had to move one from inside the closet of one office and put him back outside. No idea how it got into the office in the first place. :P

Spring seems to be the best time of year to see these monsters, so if you want to see one get out and look. They spend most of their lives undergound, which is why so few people ever see them.

I have seen them most after a good hard ground soaking rain. Some times two or three a day at times. I have seen the most down by the units that suround Benson and St.David.

Really nice pix, thanx for the post! I've seen several in SE Arizona. With them spending as much as 90% of their lives underground, everytime you see one it's very special. With all the urban development our state is undergoing, these sightings will become far and few between. These poor things are being snatched up(not literally) or rolled over all over Tucson and surrounding areas. Here's some pix of one I encountered a couple years before that huge development west of the Willow Springs Ranch north of Tucson. Sad thing is that even more is being planned for this area...sigh.
