bowsniper Report post Posted November 4, 2004 I'm going try to call in a bear for the first time this weekend in a unit where I've seen a lot of sign and the season is still open. I'll be using a Johnny Stewart tape. My question is which would be more effective: a cub in distress or a jack rabbit in distress? Thanks

TAM Report post Posted November 5, 2004 Was told by a top notch bear hunting guide out of payson that the bear cub in distress call works awesome. I tried it twice this year with no luck but plan on using it or the whitetail doe in distress the next time I go out. I've called in bears by squaking on an elk call in the past but only after I've already seen the bear. Good luck!
Tonto Report post Posted November 5, 2004 Had good succes using a cheap varmit call. High point up and call aggressively, and keep calling even when you think you've had enough. Them bears will beeline right to you.

ScottAdams Report post Posted November 5, 2004 I've had good luck with the fawn distress, jack rabbit distress and even a domestic baby pig squeel. Also have called them in with the mouth blown rabbit call. Never have used the cub distress. Scott

azcouesandelk Report post Posted November 7, 2004 Just curios where do you guys hunt bears in the pears. I have never seen a bear in the pears before. Only in oak hillsides and in the pine forest.
ScottAdams Report post Posted November 7, 2004 I live in unit 27 and hunt bears in the pears here every year. Below is a bear we hunted this August. We didn't get him but as you can see from the incriminating photos below they do eat the cactus fruit during certain times of the year. Scott
bullwidgeon Report post Posted November 7, 2004 27 can be good and so can 22,23,28,31 and 32. I am sure other units are good or can be good too but those I know can be good if conditions are right. Awesome job on the pictures Scott. Bret M.
Kilimanjaro Report post Posted November 7, 2004 Why could'nt we have seen that this past Aug. up in 27? I ran into Brett up in a nice canyon system that was FULL of ripe pear, but the bears never showed up for the feast. He said that the year before, there was bears everywhere up there, but this year was a bust for us. Oh well...... Nice pics Scott Scottyboy
