Deer Lick Powder

Recommended Posts

OK, so much for that stuff. Well then, what could be some good attractants besides deer cocaine and salt? I'm using a bow on Mr. Coues, so I can't reach out and touch at 300 yards like you rifle guys.

Thanks

Bowsniper, I'm a little curious what's wrong with deer cocain or salt? The stuff works great for me! I've got pictures of coues deer coming in 5 and 6 at a time for the stuff.

I don't have anything against salt or cocaine, I was just checking to see what else was available or other possibilities to try. There are a lot of advertised products, and I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing the boat on something. It wouldn't be the first time! BTW, please set me straight on what a "mock scrape" is.

Thanks,

During the rut in december/january coues whitetail bucks will do scrapes and rubs. A scrape is where they will scrape the ground with there hooves and maybe urinate. Walking through the woods in late december you should be able to spot some scrapes. It is just a 2-3 ft line usually next to a bush or tree made to mark territory. The rubs are when the buck rubs it's antlers on bushes or trees tearing off the bark. In december you should also be able to find fresh rubs also. A mock scrape could be made by using your hand or a stick and "pawing" the dirt to make it look like a buck was there. To top it off, pour a little deer urine next to the scrape or urinate there yourself. Give it a try.

Bowsniper, generally speaking I think a lot of the over the counter deer licks are gimmicks and way over priced. Maybe they work for eastern whitetail? For about 3 bucks you can buy a 30 pound bag of rock salt that will work great. The deer cocain can be added to a pre existing salt lick right before the hunt or during the rut to increase activity.

treestandman1 and TAM, thanks for your replies. I'm headed up to 24A for the third weekend in a row to to scout, and the wife is getting a little "testy".
