CatfishKev Report post Posted February 5, 2019 Bummer, only went that way a couple times. Usually take the Mule creek way to head up to Alpine.
oz31p Report post Posted February 5, 2019 2 hours ago, bonecollector said: Have to stop archery hunting then. How many lost arrows lay in the forest now? I think there’s a difference between the occasional lost arrows and hundreds of arrows shot into a tree. Any one drives by a camp site with trash left there it’s just slobs. But a tree full of arrrows, everyone knows hunters did it.

If the forest service considered it litter, I think the dead tree would have been cut down long ago.

Pine Donkey Report post Posted February 6, 2019 That tree holds a lot of memories for generations of archers that travel through that part of state. Some friends who put arrows in that tree are no longer with us, others are getting pretty grey, yet others who were just kids are now taking their kids hunting. Every trip up or down 191 included stopping at the arrow tree. First arrow I put in the tree must have been late 80’s or early 90’s. When my son was finally able to pull back a compound he couldn’t wait to put an arrow in the arrow tree. Not sure how or when the tradition of shooting the arrow tree started, but it seems like it’s always been a thing. Good memories, good friends, sad to see it fall but life moves on.

bigorange Report post Posted February 6, 2019 Celebrated 2 servings of elk tag soup with arrows in that tree on the way home...yeah it’s been ready to fall for years. I hear there’s one on Mt Graham too, but nowhere near the traffic as 191.

idgaf Report post Posted February 6, 2019 That was an unofficial Arizona landmark. During the wallow fire, I believe, they actually put a fireline around it.
