Recommended Posts

I have a hound pup that i need to train. She is almost a year old but i don't know what i'm doing. If you have some tips i would appriciate them. Or if you know anyone who trains dogs i might take her to them.

Training them is the easy part. Catching the lion to tie them to the tail is the hard part, But after it is done they just think they are suposed to stay that close to a lion at all times. :o

the best way to train a pup is to hunt with someone who has good dogs and neck it to a good dog or if you dont want that good one slowed down neck two pups together. its harder for them to run off necked up like that. and when you get the lion let the pups chew on it a little so the next time they remember that and that will be there goal to get to chew on it. good luck

Good luck is right. Good luck to find someone to let you run your dogs with theirs. Most houndsman do not want other dogs bringing bad habits into his pack. This is understandable as they worked hard or paid big time money for their dogs.

Most, not all Arizona houndsman think they should be the only ones running lions. Now in Utah and New Mexico things seem different. They make a hunting party out of it and think the more the better. If you can find someone to teach you how to train dogs the right way you will be lucky and you will not find anyone talk about it on the WEB for a number of reasons.

training a dog to hunt lions is very difficult and you need to make sure you are serious before you take on the task. Like everyone said the best way is to hunt them is with older finished hounds and let them lead by example, a dog can teach another dog a lot faster than a human. I don't subscribe to the necking them up deal, you neck them up where I hunt you're gonna have dead dogs.

Since you're asking I'm assuming you can't do that at the moment. Have you introduced the dog to lion scent? This should have been done already. Since you're already at a year you are a few months behind which only makes an already difficult task, even harder, there are quite a few people who will hunt your dogs for money. Dave Carlson out of Yarnell is pretty well known, and his website is www.lionhoundtraining.com, another guy you might want to look at is Greg Anderson out of Show Low, I've met him a few times in the woods and the man knows dogs.

You need to ask yourself if it's something you really want to do before you do it though. It's a full time job keeping dogs fed, in shape, broke off trash and healthy. It's not fair to the dog if you only want to half butt it. They are bred to do this but that dog will only become as good as you make it.

Sorry if I don't seem gracious. I'm only 23 but I've been around hounds since I was born and I see people get in and out all the time because they don't realize the commitment it takes to make dogs ESPECIALLY in arizona. The worst part about it is good dogs get ruined or wasted.

CouesAZ you are pretty close, it's not always about bad habits though. Most real houndsmen know their pack, they have hunted with them so much they can tell whats going on by the way a dog wags their tail or the tone of their voice. It's just another unknown thats hard to deal with. A dog has to prove its trustworthy just like a human.
