Berger Bullets

Recommended Posts

the highlight reel of these bullets is amazing and the VLD's ARE made for big game hunting....i ordered 200, 130 grain VLD's for my .264 and as soon as i get my rifle back from the gunsmith (muzzle brake) i will have a full report on them...i plan on shooting my javi with them this month and a european boar with them near the end of march...the boar will really test if they are a "target" or a "hunting" bullet

Tim, they are target/match bullets. Not hunting bullets.

Bla Bla Bla...... What box have you been living in..... .... Oh I for got.... You don't read well... my bad...    You could buy the BTW video, Casey... I have one I'll sell or Rent to you so you can make an educated judgement.... ;) There are PLENTY of Dead critters to prove that the VLD's are not just for punching paper.....

There are also pleny of animals that were not recovered because they were shot with a target bullet. But of course, none of that comes to mind does it?

No. just dont understand why people use Match bullets for hunting. Have read way to many stories about game lost with target bullets.

GH...

Walt Berger recommends the 168 for all big-game.... I told him that I was using the 175's and he said that they would work but that they would not perform to there max ability on deer size game... I told him that I also wanted to use the load on elk and he said that I would be fine with either the 168 or 175.... I am going to workup a load for the 168.. They are amazing...

J-

Jason, what caliber are you shooting?? I found that 82 gr. of IMR 7828 was the best load with the 168 VLD in my 300 Wby. That probably doesn't help you a bit..... but thought I'd share just in case.

Casey,

What Gun/bullet or Bow/arrow/Broadhead combination doesn't have losses???? For cryin' out loud.... we all sure know that a .270 WSM with 140 gr. AccuBonds will kill a coues... if you shoot him 4 times. Obviously it is the Opperator and not the tool that Skews the results! If 13 year old girls can make one shot kills on bull elk at 385 and 450 yds.... with the Berger 168 VLD, then I'd say that it is a Proven Big Game bullet!

Oh, and Casey..... those little girls managed to keep the skull plates of those bulls in one piece and the horns, too. ;)  :P

Hey G/H..... Thanks for the Avitar!!! ;)

Thanks everyone for your responses!

Casey, I respect everyone's opinions regarding the question. So far you are the only person to not like them for hunting. Do you have anything to substantiate your position? If so I'd like to hear it?

Thanks,

Tim

AZtrapper...

Why did you go with the MOLY???? Do you think it is necessary?

Jason

Jason

I went with the Moly for several reasons one from talking with Dave Miller, and Frank Wells (gunsmiths in tucson) They both said that they help "restore" older barrels by filling in pits and such in the barrel, and that will improve groups as well as cut the air better. In my 300 H&H I found the following to be true- the groups tightened up from 1 1/2 - 2 at two hundered yards to 3/4 to 1 inch. Using the same powder and such I also found they have less drop as well. So this was a win win for me and other than having to build a new "cheat" sheet for longer ranges.

So I am guessing the moly would reduce copper fouling

but what about moly fouling in the rifleing

Would you need to clean after fewer shots?

Of course this would only be an issue at the range

Not hunting

I asked the same question and I posted the question on Long Range Hunting and I got the following responses..

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17...ter-word-27332/

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19...non-moly-26614/

I am still not sure if it is snake oil but if you are getting good results I would stay stick with it... Is there a certain procedure to clean a barrel that has had moly bullets run thru it?

thanks

I don't know about reducing copper fouling, and as far as moly fouling no problem there either I clean my gun the same way as always. I do want the moly to stay in any voids or pits in the barrel. ( if there is any). At the range I clean after every group when shooting.

The moly issue is one that has been discussed on every shooting list for years. I found it did reduce my groups, I did also increased my powder charge in my loads and was able to increase my fps with the loads. One thing I did also find was if i shot factory loads the fps also increased which I don't understand. Many of the people on Long Range Hunter have been helpful since I joined as well. One of the reasons I tried moly coated bullets was due to the fact my groups had opened up a little in the rifle. I due plan on having it re-barreled sometime this year but not until a back-up long range hunting gun is built. I finally found a Remington 721 in 300H&H at a fair price all i wanted was the action to build a back-up 300H&H. So until that gun is done and shooting I didn't want to re-barrel this one. So Like I said after talking with Dave and Frank I tried moly and have been happy with it so far.
