Last Thursday my son and I decided to give it one last try for archery deer down in our favorite unit (36C). We left out early and as we drove south on 286 we passed no less that 15 BP vehicles all of which were headed north. Well we get to our chosen location and set out in search of some antlers. After a couple hours and a blown stalk on a 110"+ buck we head for the truck. As we come up out of the wash and head to our vehicle only we find that we were not alone . As we got to the truck there was another vehicle on the other side of the road from us and there were two individuals one of which was without question a UDA, the other was a white guy who politely asked what we were "chasin". I told him we were out hunting deer, the whole while i was watching what they were up to, each of them had two 1 gallon water jugs in the hands and the bed of the truck had at least 30 1 gallon water jugs in it. I told my son to hurry up so we could depart the area. As we departed i intentionally backed up and got the license plate number and watched the 2 guys disappear into a draw which i am sure held a whole group of UDA's. As we drove outa of the area i had made up my mind i would flag down the first BP agent we came across after all they were everywhere as we drove in. To my amazement there were no BP agents in the area NONE i did not find a BP agent until i was on Sandario road just short of the monument and this was about 40 minutes after we came across the suspicious truck and activity. I gave the agent the plate number and location and was on my way.

I cannot describe how angry i was at the situation in regards to the guys and the water, but i was even more angered at the lack of BP presence, do they all go home when the sun comes up? because they sure werent out and about.

They were somewhere. Illegals are coming through in many places. BP can't be everywhere at one time. Don't blame them for not enough help. You did what you could.

I don't have it handy, but when I had a hunt down there several years ago, a BP agent gave me a phone number you can call to report stuff like you saw. You can probably find it online if you search around. Anyway, it's like a hotline for reporting illegals. That way you don't have to lose time trying to find a BP agent on the road when you are out.

I was hunting in 34A and glassed up some drug smugglers, they had on hudge packs. I called the BP and they took my number and they said they will send someone out and they will for sure give me a call. they were walking away from me so I just kept an eye on them so I could guide the BP right to them. Couple hours later no one showed up and no one ever called. Made me a little upset. I understand that the BP can't be everywhere but they didn't even try. I'll give them the benifit on the doubt that maybe the were busting someone who had a truckload of drugs.

I'm not sure about the BP, but I was impressed with the G&F response to a call in I made a few years ago. I called just about dark one evening and reported some yahoos riding their ATV's all over non-roaded ridgelines and hills, etc. Within 3 minutes I got a returned phone call from the local warden and he got the information, location and he nabbed those yahoos first thing the next day. Always report...if anyone is available, they will be show up. Law enforcement folks are usually willing to do what it takes. Don't think I am naive, I also know there is plenty of politics at play within law enforcement, but all in all I salute their work and dedication to such a dangerous job.
