Unique Mexico Deer

Recommended Posts

I harvested this buck last Friday evening in Mexico. The whole experience was awesome as many of you know. The surrounding country was something to behold, extremely rugged and deep where you think getting to the next hill would be easy only to find once you get over the one you’re on, there is a 100 or so foot drop straight down to get to the next one, and every hill thereafter.

I went with a good friend of mine who took a really nice 109” deer the week before, so I was already stoked from helping him on that deer. The next 5 days of waiting, all I could think about was getting back down there, nights were not any better. Dreams of seeing all sorts of cool antler configurations danced around in my mind. Dan saw this buck last Weds evening. By the time I got a glimpse of him he was moving over the top of a hill about 900 yards away. It was getting close to dark and we couldn’t put any strategy together on him that night. We noticed how tall he was and that his G2s were only a couple of inches apart from each other at the top. He literally dwarfed the doe he was with and just had one of those really deep stocky bodies. The length from the base to the tip of his antlers was as tall as his chest was deep, which on a good deer is around 15”. I have never seen a deer that looked like this, he is extremely unique, and I knew I wanted to find this deer again… if I could… if anything, just to get a better look at him. We did…. 2 days later Dan picked him up a little over 600 yards out. Just as I got the 15X56’s on the area where the deer was, Dan all of the sudden said… “He’s gone “… I ended up seeing him bust out of the brush chasing after a little buck who was stealing his doe. The big buck had such a hard time getting after them both that he was really losing ground. The old bucks body was huge in comparison to the little buck and could not match the speed or agility of the little guy. Over the hill they went, not to return. We kept glassing and thought maybe his doe would bring him back over. About 45 minutes later we saw the little buck on the next ridge walking away and he was looking pretty dejected. He stopped once and looked back down into the ravine. So we figured the big buck got his doe back and they decided to bed down somewhere near there. I had to get a better angle on the ravine so I hiked up to the top of another mountain which put me within shooting range of anywhere within that ravine. We glassed for several hours and at about 4:30 pm I picked him and the doe up about 460 yards across from me feeding. After the shot was complete and the buck was down, It took me nearly a half hour to get to him with the terrain as it is, but the anticipation is really what gets to you. When we got him back to camp and finished caping him out we looked at his teeth, and this old timer barely had any at all. We estimated him close to 9 years old, he was old. It was his time either way, and I thank God I had an opportunity to get a chance at him. The 3” drop tine gives him additional character on top of his already unique shape. All in all it was a great trip. The owner of the ranch, his son, and all of their friends were “GREAT “ people to be around. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. If you eliminate any of the deductions he gross’s right at 111”.

Thanks for the kind comments, I am truly happy about getting this deer.

Doug, the dog is my little hunting buddy, extremely well trained and I pretty much take her with me on all of my hunts.

It's especially good to have her when I hunt in those southern units near the border. she has spooked plenty of illegals on more than one occaision when they have got too close or have tried to steal from me, late at night and your half asleep.

Mike,

Absolutely awesome deer. You'll have a hard time beating the charecter of this one's configuration. You're a super hard hunter and your efforts pay off.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Carl
