elecshoc Report post Posted July 28, 2018 do a quick google search on replacing the big 3 on the Dodges. I did mine quite a few years ago and its basically returning the hot leads and ground wires with better cabling. the grounds from the factory will eventually go bad. I still use my 96 for working and hunting, once I replaced the cabling it cleared up quite a bit of battery and dim lighting issues.
Lucafu1 Report post Posted July 28, 2018 You can check voltage really quick while cranking. If it drops under under 9V its probably taking a dump.
Hoss50 Report post Posted July 29, 2018 I had an odd charging issue on my 05 dodge Cummins recently. I was pretty sure the alternator was going out because my voltage kept fluctuating up and down. I grabbed a new alternator and started to change it. I got the belt off, the first bolt out, and then went to disconnect the charging wire and the nut that held it on was backed way off. It was touching sometimes and not others which was causing the issue. So I had to put it all back together, and getting that belt back on can be a PITA.
