Good time in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody, I had a good time down in Sonora. I went down last Saturday with two tags to fill. The plan was to shoot the first good buck I saw and then wait for a big one. I went by myself and to a ranch I had never been to before but I plan on going again. On Sunday evening I glassed a buck going up a mountain across from me. It was a long shot and somehow I hit him in the head. He dropped in his tracks. It was pretty dark so I climbed down and went by the cowboys house told him about it. He went with me in the morning on horseback to retrieve my buck.

It was a beautiful ranch and there were deer in every canyon. Water was also running in every creek bottom and acorns everywhere. I also watched deer and turkeys together on one hillside. It got cold at night but I stayed warm in my tent.

On Tuesday I was on top of a point glassing several different canyons. The smaller bucks were chasing does all over and I was watching a bigger buck follow a doe but they went over the top and out of view. It was getting late but I walked over and glassed into a small canyon behind me and right away I see a buck. He sees me too and takes off. Then I see another deer coming out of the brushy creek bottom. I put my rifle scope up and see long tines. I shoot and hit him right in the shoulder. I was very pleased when I wlked up and saw he had twelve points.

Both of my bucks had broken left main beams and most bucks I glassed had broken points. On my way out of the ranch I stopped and glassed a hillside were a big buck had given me the slip on Monday. Sure enough he was there and what I would have given for one more permit. He was the king of that mountain.

Keven,

Looks like nice country to hunt. Do you have any more views of your second buck? The King of the Mountain will be waiting for your return.

Congratulations goes out to you Kevin. The country you are hunting is absolutely beautiful, perfect whitetail country.

I have been hunting in an area down there the past few weeks which is not even close to that kind of country.

Are you hunting closer to Arizona as opposed to somewhere down near Hermosillo?

Great pictures, and again nice job, well done !

Dang nice bucks Keven. Congrats to you on what sounds like a great trip. It looks like some beautiful country. I am assuming that this was a do it yourself hunt, if so how was the border crossing?

This was a do-it-yourself hunt but I got lots of info from this website and Coueshunter helped me out a lot. The ranch I was on is near Arizpe(about 3 hours from the border). The border crossing was great. I had my rifles checked three times and no problems. Coming out I had all my paperwork already filled out and there was no delay there as well. The road from the highway up into the part of the ranch I hunted on was terrible though. Four Low almost all the way. I would definitely be a little slower on the trigger next go round. I also would probably pay to use horses next time to get farther in. The amount of deer is incredible and if I could just let these little dinks go maybe someday I'll kill a real big one. I saw what to me are shooter bucks every day.

Kevin, first of all congratulations on your two bucks. Being a meat eater that I am, was your first buck spoiled by the time you retrieved it the next morning? :( Did you bring any meat home or was this just a horn hunting trip? I was just wondering if it was custom to leave the meat with the working hands or do most bring their meat home. Again, thanks for sharing your hunt and pics with us. The country side looked awesome.
