KISS go with 270WSM, heck Hornady 270 WIN 140 SST Superformance has a MV of 3100FPS. Hornady 270 WIN PH 145 ELDX going out the muzzle at + 2900 FPS. Yeah Yeah 6.5 does this and that better (fractionally) but when its all said and done the 6.5 short whatever and fat 2boot still needs a dial up and a wind calculation at 600, 700 or 800 yds no different ( well a COUPLE clicks different) than the 270 WSM. So if complicating things and sweating this and that is fun have at it but the WSM 270 is an easy solution. I get it no bragging rights in something available and mundane. lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 27, 2018 If you want to step up to a .277", go ahead and build a 27 Nosler and run the 170 Elite Hunter. Quit pussyfooting around and wring out the .277. The .277" 140gr @ 3100 is surpassed right off the bat by a .264" 140gr @ 3100. BC, SD both mean more energy on target, flatter trajectory, less drift, higher retained velocity, and better penetration. Dope? at 800 yards you have to dial up for the 6.5 lets say 15 MOA of dope, for the 270 you are saying its to big a challenge to dial 2-3 more MOA? Wind drift. Now the advantage creeps in, but at 800 yards you still need to get the wind right. If you get it wrong by more than 3 mph 6.5 won't save you, now just a gut shot vs nice clean through and through the lungs. Guess you can hope that gut shot catches a lot of liver and you can track for 50-70-120 yards. At 800 yards don't you still need to get your distance, wind and drop calculation spot on? 308 or 7MM RUM don't you still need to dope accurately? You could look at a .270, 30-06, 300 win, 300 weatherby, 284, 7MM, ect. Pick your favorite cartridge. The trajectory is basically the same for all of these rounds until you surpass 500 yards. Then it gets exciting. Bullet selection will change your point of impact and down range energy more quite often than the cartridge once your bullet gets past the 500-600 yard range. Point being that 99% of the animals are shot under 400 yards. The only difference between these cartridges is the energy that they produce. The .270 will knock down any game animal in the lower 48 with a good shoot. A 7MM won't kill anything if you miss.
