Mountain Goat!!!

Recommended Posts

Just checked draw results in MT and I drew a mountain goat tag!! Never stepped foot in the unit so I have a lot of learning to do in a short time! Looks like an alpine backpack hunt. Should be a riot! Started running last night as I only have until sept 1 to get my butt in shape for this! Looking for a new lightweight rifle. Any suggestions? Id like a proof summit but they are way to far out on the builds. Kimber has the ascent that a guy can get off the rack, but Ive had bad luck with kimbers being kinda erratic. Anyone have a sweet lightweight rifle they are looking to sell?

Congradulations on the tag. Make sure you post up a story and lots of photos after your hunt.

Have you looked at the nosler M48 they arent hard to find, or if you want a cheap rifle that shoots good the T/C venture. The 5 th link down is an HS Precision rifle it might suit you.

Thanks for all the replys! Ill look into the Christensen arms guns a bit.

Thanks for the offer Casey, Im probably gonna beat the heck out of a gun on this trip so Im gonna stay away from borrowing a gun but I appreciate it! It gives me an excuse to buy a new one anyhow!

I finally had to bite the bullet and go to AK for mountain goat, I'm hoping one of the lower states pays off someday. I love goat hunting and I am extremely jealous and excited for you, nothing in the world quite like the mtn goat.

Take a look at the Christensen arms ridgeline

I got one in a 300 win mag that's 6.8 pounds before the nightforce shv I put on it.

Shooting under 1/2" at 100 yards and 3" group at 500 with my reloads

Yotebuster if you are in Glendale and need a firearm shipped to an FFL, try Bell road pawn, they only charge $15 for a transfer, the zip code is 85032 and its on the companies list for FFLs. I have bought three guns from them and they are excellent to deal with.

Nothing wrong with the mtn ascent. I have one in 280 ai and shoots .5 moa with factory 140 accubonds. The key is to bed the action and slightly mill the fore grip on the stock for a full free float. Buddy has the same gun but in 6.5 creed did the same thing to it and it is a .5 moa or less. Great rifle if you ask me. Congrats on the tag! Mtn goat is on top op my bucket list so I'm a bit jealous. Good luck and make sure to post lots of pics.

Thanks for all the replies!! Ive got an email in to Proof research as it sounds like they have a few guns ready to go for sale. Im gonna start there and then if that falls through look into the Christensen and kimbers. Im thinking something in the 6.5-28 range. Bigger bore as I would like it to not only be light but be capable of a longer shot as well. Leaning towards a .28 nosler since if I ever go on a sheep hunt in NWT or Alaska I could combo it with a moose so Id like something that could handle them all. Ill be sure to keep everyone posted on the progress. I got some really good info from a guy today that gave me some great starting points.
