Pistol load developers?

Recommended Posts

We all know Lance is the best of the best for squeezing every drop of speed and accuracy out of a rifle.

Question is, is there anyone here who does similar stuff with a handgun?

I have a glock model 40, 10mm that I would like to have a load developed for. I've got the stuff, but am short on handgun loading knowledge and time.

Great pistol and great round.

My own personal experience with pistols is that in almost all cases they are inherently inaccurate. To the point where load difference would be such a minor factor compared to grip, stance, trigger pull, I'd imagine less than 5% of top pro shooters would see a difference in loads (short ranges, etc). Not bashing you firstcoues, but outside a platform like a T/C contender that's actually designed to shoot longer ranges, it would be hard to convince me that load workups would affect normal pistol shooting to much degree.

Years ago I used to shoot IPSC and loaded lots of pistol ammo. In my opinion it is generally much easier to work up a good load for a pistol vs a rifle. If you are looking for a super accurate load for a slow fire competition like bullseye it may take a little more work. It sounds like you are more interested in a combat/hunting type load, accuracy consistently able to obtain center mass hits at 50 yd with plenty of power. Use matched sets of brass. Keep the length consistent so the crimp on each round is consistent. Choose a couple of quality bullets and some promising powders. Load sets with increasing powder charges and set COAL to SAAMI spec. Test fire these rounds and I would be surprised if you did not come up a suitable load. When comparing velocity data on pistol powders keep in mind some manufactures publish data from tests done with a 10 in. barrel while others may publish data fired in a 5 in. barrel.

I would disagree with this. I've seen different factory loads in this exact gun shoot wildly different group sizes.

If you know of factory loads that group well can you obtain the bullet used in that load as a loose box bullet? That would be a great starting point, you already know the gun likes the bullet.
