Mid Life/wife crisis Question

Recommended Posts

I wouldnt think about a truck without a diesel when it comes to pulling a trailer. I cant speak for the dodge though since my experience is with a ford 6.7. Absolute beast and tows my 32ft 5th wheel like its not even there.

The work truck I have now is a 5.7 hemi. Biggest POS I've ever driven! It's mostly between 9 and 12 mpg and can't get out of it's own way. Every 6.4 I've driven has gotten far better mileage and had far better power. I really like my 6.7 Cummins but I wouldn't consider keeping one past 100000 miles. Out of over a dozen 3500 diesels, all Duramax and Cummins I haven't seen one between 100000 and 150000 miles that was cheaper to maintain than replace. Could buy two new diesels for the money we've spent on Duramax injectors.

I've spent over 30 years driving 18-wheelers. You can't beat a diesel for pulling. The catch is both Maintenance and Service are substantially more expensive. Before purchasing a diesel consider if the weight you intend to tow in the frequency with which you tow justifies the expense of the diesel. Three quarter and one ton trucks handle better when towing but if you drive them around off-road on your hunt they ride like a hay rack. Any choice you make is going to be a compromise. Just do your homework and try to make the best choice for you and your family.

Now that my career is not related to construction at all I haul my tent trailer, stock trailer and or UTV trailer loaded probably less than 30-40 times a year. A half ton is so much better all around and if you get a decent truck it will handle your trailer just fine with significantly less maintenance and cost. That being said I miss my diesel but my checking account doesn't.

Unless you are going to pull something super heavy, stick with gas. Its not worth the maintenance unless you absolutely need one. The big dodge and chvey motors are good.

I'd get a motor home that will pull my Jeep. Love the rt11 4x4 pop I used to have. Here's an idea, I sold mine to a great guy on here then bought a 7'x4' cargo trailer. Got a 12'x12' alacinac tent, some couts, and put all my camping stuff in it. Just hook on and go. Light , no unloading garage or shed, and I pull it with my Jeep. Everybody is happy. And you get more room and have the trailer to secure stuff in will hunting. Because no one keeps there hands to them selves anymore.. Anyway that's the way I roll..

If you decide on a Ford stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4's. You can do a DEF delete kit for the 6.7 and I can put you in touch with Chris Rollins in Mesa who has a shop and can talk to him about trucks and he can do an inspection on one for you before you decide to buy it.

He specializes in Fords but works on Chevys and Dodges in his shop too. There is a guy who runs a transporter buisenss and Chris does his maintence. The guy has over 700K on his 6.7

Chris is pretty well known and he just had a guy ship his truck from Hawaii for him to do a bunch of work on it. Business is called Rowdy Racks. Shares the building with Caswells.
