shortpants Report post Posted January 8, 2008 Well it's been awhile since I've posted on here because I've been so busy. I have been reading about all of your successes so congrats to all of you guys who have been posting your trophies on here. I did have the pleasure of taking a very good friend of mine hunting for his first buck ever and yes, it was a coues! We only had 3 days to hunt, set up camp, take down camp, ok 2 1/2 days to hunt. We were going to hold out for a 75'' buck until the end and then take anything the last afternoon. We set up camp the 1st morning and glassed close by revealing nothing but a few does. That afternoon we were set up 1 1/2 miles from camp glassing coues paradise! We found a shooter class buck and put a stalk on him but he and his does fed away from us and day 1 came to a close. We set out of camp well before sun up the second morning. After a 2 mile hike in the dark we were glassing where we thought the buck from the night before would be. The clouds kept the morning sun at bay but we still found quite a few deer. A lot of does and a handfull of smaller bucks later we packed up and headed further into coues country. We glassed throughout the day until last light but could not turn up the quality of buck we were searching for. We saw 35 deer and a bobcat that day so it was fun anyway. The last morning we hiked to a different area and got set up, well almost set up. I set up my tripod and reached for my binos that were supposed to be around my neck but I had forgotten them in the truck. After a world record sprint to camp and back I was finally glassing. Once again finding deer was not a problem but it was fokhorn city. Since it was the last day and we hadn't seen but one shooter buck the 1st day we decided a forky that got to close was going to get lead thrown at it. Well the bucks must have heard us make those plans because the best shot we had was to cross 4 deep cuts to get a shot at a forky and then have to pack him back out of there. I told BJ I had one more spot we could try for the afternoon and was sure we could find a buck a lot closer than anything we were seeing. We went back to camp and packed up. Wasting no time we hurried to my afternoon spot. Before we even got our packs off I spotted a spike 150 yard below us. BJ said he wanted him so we got set up. BJ couldn't get set up properly on the bipod because of the steep angle so he snuck over to my pack to get my jacket to use as a rest. When he did that the puck pegged us. He stood broadside staring at us at 100 yards for 7-8 minutes. BJ could not get back to his rifle that was 5 yards away and eventually the buck had enough and took off. I could tell BJ was a little discouraged. I told him not to worry, that we would find a bigger one. We started glassing again and found a lot of bald headed deer. With the last hour upon us suddenly BJ said ''THERE'S A BUCK, A NICE 3 POINT!'' ''WHERE'' I exclaimed? ''I CAN SEE THEM WITH MY NAKED EYE'' he said. I saw them and put the 15's on the group of 4 spikes and a 3x4 buck. ''YOU NEED TO SHOOT THAT BUCK'' I said and he set up for the shot. BJ made a perfect shot at 280 yards and the buck was down. He had just taken his first buck ever and it was a beutiful 3x4! I had a blast hunting with my good friend BJ! We ended up seeing a total of 83 deer, 3coons, some pigs, a bobcat, and a fox! Score doesn't matter in this situation but I know somebody will ask so I grossed him at 78 1/2. Congrats to you on an outstanding trophy BJ and I can't wait till next time!
