Edge Report post Posted May 9, 2018 Does anyone use a portable evap cooler in their garage? Any drawbacks? Too much moisture? I've got two going in my shop right now. I placed a pin hole in one of the water tubes feeding a pad and I get a fine mist too. I'm doing iron work with bare steel and haven't noted any oxidation. Roosevelt Mark Report post Posted May 9, 2018 Run mine every day in the garage, works great. Until the humidity goes up...
Hoss50 Report post Posted May 9, 2018 I have a small 1 in my garage that rolls around. It is helpful when you are directly in front of it. The best thing to do would be mount one outside with the discharge in the garage. Remember that you need airflow in and out of the garage for these to work well. If you lock yourself in the garage with a cooler with no venting you are just going to create Florida in July in your garage which will suck. I try to put mine sitting in front of my open garage side door and keep the main garage door open about a foot or two.
ctracingraptor Report post Posted May 10, 2018 Why not just run a mini split?

Viper Report post Posted May 10, 2018 I have one on the outside of my garage, blowing in through a hole in the wall. It's a large roll around type I have fastened to the wall. Pads on two sides. If the outside temp is below 95 I vent it through the house...works great. Otherwise I just run it when I'm working in the garage. I got it from Weather Shack on Main in AJ. They have good prices. Hoss50 Report post Posted May 10, 2018 A mini-split is a good choice too if you are in it for the long haul.
Mocha1545 Report post Posted May 10, 2018 I cut a hole in the garage and mounted a window unit. Put up ducts in the ceiling of the garage to blow the hot air out of the attic. Works great until monsoon season.

bigorange Report post Posted May 10, 2018 My buddy has one that works great until it gets too humid. Keep the doors open as others have said for plenty of ventilation. Good thing with the portable is you can move it to where it blows right on you. My old boss had a permanent cooler installed on his garage that he ran all the time and said he never had issues with rust or mold. I have a portable AC that also does pretty well as long as it's vented well. I've gone through 2 mini splits on my office in about 8 years...decided to go with a much cheaper window AC (at the recommendation of my AC guy who says mini splits are very difficult to work on) and may put one of those through the wall in the garage too. So far very pleased and even quieter than the mini split was.
