24A Javelina (Collared Peccary)

Recommended Posts

What a way to start out the 2008 year hunting the very aggresive Javelina. On January 1st we were headed out to see if we could see the pigs where we had been scouting them at. First thing we saw on the road were 2 dead pigs 100 yards from where I shot mine last year (where we were scouting this year). The kill looked fresh so we decided to pull over. There on the hill was about 5 that we saw. So we started stalking. We got 100 yards away and I told my dad to stay where we were and I will stalk around. When I got to the other side I dropped into the creek and started up the hill they were on. I ended up within 30 yards of one and decided it was too small then it happened about 8 yards straight up the hill I herd a grunt. Behind the catclaw was a nice one. I pulled back my new Bowtech Allegance and let one rip. I saw the arrow hit the ground on the other side and off went the pig down to my left. She then stopped 20 yards from me and started to do doughnuts. I knew I had got her and then it happened...............she came after me my only thought was to try and run hitting her with an arrow as she chased me then I fell and when I fell she headed down the hill to expire. Got to love those pigs.

On January the 2nd we headed naturally to the same spot and started to head around the mountain in the jeep. We had just hit the dirt road when there it was one ran in front of the jeep. So my dad and I jumped out and headed twards the single pig (no others in the herd). We got onto the other side and saw the catclaw to our right move. We knew it was him so my dad ran up to the bush and shot the sucker at 10 yards. My dad then said, "sh%$ I hit him too far back." So there we go, we were on a blood trail about 30 yards away. When we got to the bushes where the blood trail headed we could hear him in there. My dad then peeked down a little brush tunnel and started to pull back his Bowtech Equalizer at about 15 yards. RIP then thud, and again RIP then thud. I was on his left and said, "dad he has to be dead." Here he came right after my dad but badly wounded (weaving) he laid one more into him and down he went.

Let me tell you, my dad has two valves replaced in his heart and has killed numerous pigs and deer. He is my best friend and the best father ANYONE could ever have. He will be turning 60 on January 17 and he still has many numerous years to go. Take those dads and kids out hunting, it is the most unforgetable time you have to spend with them. Take care all of you. HERE IS THE PICS:

Been shooting my vanes like that before Blazer even came along. If I remember correctly the guy who owns CarbonTec arrows told us about staggering our vanes on our target arrows that some of the Olympic shooters were doing it. Said you could shoot shorter lighter vanes and that they will control like longer vanes at longer distances. So Robert the owner of Broken Arrow Archery and a few other guys started playing. Not sure why or how but it seems to work for us. I stagger all of them now. Plus it makes everyone ask WHY!!!

Clay,

Sounds like a fun, exciting two days to start a fresh hunting year with your dad.

Gotta beware of those charging, ninja pecarries on their death runs :o

Gonna chase some coues with the bow this month?
