wfh Report post Posted January 3, 2008 Hello Guys, How bout some thoughts on rifle scopes used in long range shooting. It seems that shots at a Coues deer occur at distances of 300 yard or greater more often that not. What seems to be a good scope to handle this and greater yardages? I am comfortable out to about 300 with my Leopold 3x9 on the range, but have trouble in the field with it. Would a long range target scope be a better way to go? What do folks that have been doing this very sucessfully use? Thoughts? Thanks!

Coues Sniper Report post Posted January 4, 2008 I use a Leupold VXL 4.5-14 x56mm (the one with the cut out of the bottom) with custom turrets from Leupold and really like it. Not that i would shoot at game that far, but i practice with it out to 1000 yards and have been very impressed with the setup. You can get much fancier depending on your wallet (Nightforce, etc) but Leupold has always worked great for me and the 14 power allows me to shoot far pretty comfortably while still having a 4.5 power low end for closer shots and better target acquisition on moving animals. Just my 2 cents.

I have killed eleven coues deer and mabey two were less than three hundred yards sooo...if one happens to jump up when I am gettin to my glassin spot guess I'll just shoot from the hip
TAM Report post Posted January 4, 2008 You may want to look into the Ziess Conquest line of scopes. They come with the turrets and in my opinion are the best scope for the money. Doug at Camera land has some real good prices on them as well. I shoot the 6.5x20 and love it!!!
wfh Report post Posted January 4, 2008 All, Thanks a million for the excellent responses. I'm currently researching the scopes mentioned and will let you know which way I go. Brings up another question. What are turrets or a turret set-up? Also, thoughts a a Savage 300 remington ultra-mag to mount under the scope I chose? As you can tell, I am a newbie at this. elpepe25 Report post Posted January 4, 2008 with the experimenting ive done with the ziess, nikons, burris ect the leupold mark 4 is the only one that has consistanly held zero after turret use, i know the nightforce will also. i may have had lemons in these other brands and this is just my opinion
elpepe25 Report post Posted January 4, 2008 turrets allow you to finger adjust your windage and elevation on the fly from a cut or ballistics chart to change your point of impact to be dead on at various distances and wind speeds. they allow you to zero your rifle at whatever distance and adjust to be able to hold dead on however far you intend to shoot, no guessing on hold over. keep in mind to properly use a tactical scope like listed above you need a range finder, a ballistics chart for your rifle and load, and an angle finder. im sure the knoledgable people on here can describe it better but i think thats the basics or turret use
