Unit 10 CHAMP Hunt Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My name is Calvin. I have been reading this forum for years and I'm glad this is my first post. Years ago I got spinal cord cancer. It may have done serious damage to my body, but it didnt do anything to my love of hunting and the outdoors. It truly is my passion. Because of my disability I can put in for CHAMP hunt licenses.

This season I got lucky and drew the CHAMP bull elk license for unit 10 starting Nov 9. I have never been to the unit and I know that some of you probably know it like the back of your hand. I have looked at some of the stuff on Big Bo. Any help, advice, stories that might help on my hunt would be amazing. Thank you and I look forward to talking with people. You can send me PM with anything you don't want the world to see. I would never share any information that you give to me. Thanks again.

Buy the Big Bo access permit. No use limiting yourself to only using 40% of the unit by NOT doing so. I have never hunted the unit, so I cannot give any specific advice. If you need help packing out game, let us know. I am sure I could be convinced to jump in a truck and be up there in 3 hours...

Thanks for the reply. I agree with getting the Big Bo permit just because of all the habitat it will add to my hunt. If I get one down somewhere nasty I will probably need some help and I really appreciate your offer.

Not a smart butt question because im not familiar with champ qualifications but if you shoot one in nasty country you would be able body to get into the nasty country. Every champ i have seen or hunted with was wheel chair bound. My boy has the jr cow hunt in 10 oct 5th and we will be checking out big bo since jr hunt cost a wopping $1 may be similar for champ hunt? But ill let you know what and where we go and see

Presmyk- Not true. My Dad shot a deer with a Champ tag last year. Took everything he had to get him set up 50 yards from the ranger to shoot across a small ravine. Then I went over to the deer for him. He would have never made it across that cut. My Dad has not lost his marksmanship to shoot across a canyon in nasty country or his love for the hunt. He has lost his ability to walk across a canyon or even 100 yards.

Thats very true. The champ hunter we hunted with in 6b was in wheel chair due to spinal injury but could pick off a fly with his crossbow at 50 yards, when shooting he has his bolts numbered and you can hand him random bolts and he could tell you witch number it is by poi. Just because its a champ tag dont mean a thing.there were times where he was set up off rd on water hole and git hubt screwed up by road hunters that arw able body and could hike. Its stuff like that you take for granted untill you cant do it.

Good luck to you and your son on his hunt presmyk. I really look forward to hearing about it. The story Smith2260 told has happened to me a couple times. 400 yards across a canyon was my last cow. I didn't get to see her again until my brothers got her back to the truck for me many long hours later.

The ranch doesn't give a discount for CHAMP hunters but they do allow us to use atv on the ranch.
