My 2007 December rifle buck

Recommended Posts

I have to say I was dissapointed in myself. I usually pride myself on getting and doing my homework, putting in the time to scout and have everything pretty much figured out by opening day. This year has been a roller coaster of events, and work and family obligations made it difficult to get out and scout. But thanks to help from some people I got some starting points to check out.

I got out opening weekend and saw a good amount of bucks. A buddy of mine took time off his hunt to come over and help . We tried getting in on a real nice buck but kicked up a doe and a spike on the way in. This in turn spooked the buck we were after. After the blown attempted we sat down and did some more glassing. Then I saw the most amazing thing in my short hunting career, a mointain lion. I glassed him up slipping along a hillside. At first all I could say is "Holy crap Rob, Ive got a lion!". I noticed he was slipping along very stealthy and panned over to the direction he was going and saw three deer. It was incredible, we actually got to watch a lion sneak in on a small spike. The whole time watching, hoping the lion would make the kill so we could sneak up and get a shot. The lion got in to about 15 yards of the deer and made his move. The deer busted him as he made the lundge and got away. The deer ran about 70 yards and just stared back in the lions direction, as the cat slipped into the wash for what we thought might be another attempt. This all took place at about 900 yards so Rob and I hightailed it down to a lower ridge to try and close the distance and hopfully get a shot. We setr up again and found the deer still frozen like statues but could not locate the lion again. It sucks we were never able to get a shot but im greatful that I got to witness something like that.

The rest of the weeknend went well. We glassed up a bunch of smaller bucks and knowing I could get out later in the hunt and into the beginning of the rut i passed on them.

i headed down friday night after work to finish out the hunt. My buddy was busy trying to fill his tag so my father came down with me. We went back to the area we had seen a lot of small bucks ands I wanted to get up to a higher spot to glass. We got there at dark thirty and stsrted the trek in. We got to the lower spot, and the spot we had sat 2 weeks before and my Dad had that look on his face. He looked at me and asked how much further. I decided we could just sit the same area as before. We got settled and as time went by deer started popping up all around us. Saw lots of does and fawns and finally I glassed up a descent 2 point that was chasing some does. I was trying to decide if i want to go after the buck as i watched him make his way farther across the valley. Finally I told my dad i was going to go afetr him if he bedded down. We had watched a doe and a fawn work there way towards the base of the hill we were sitting on and knew they were right below us. Not two minutes after I decided to go for the 2 point my dad says theres a buck. I looked down and saw the buck following the path that the doe and fawn had taken. He was headed right at us. I put up my glasses and got a better look at him. I didnt take the time to study him but saw enough antler to make my decision to shoot. I snuck back up behind the rocks we were sitting on and loaded a shell. I slipped around the right side of the out cropping and laid across a large rock. The buck had come in another 50 yards closer and stopped broadside. I put the cross hairs on him and pulled the trigger. Instictivly i load another shell and tried to find him in the scope again and saw him running to the right. In the excitment I lost him in the scope, regained composure and tried to find him again. Just as the thought raced through myu head " Oh crap I lost him!" I heard my dads voice yell " Hes down!".

I scored him at 89 without deduction and 85 with. The bucks got great character and I couldnt be happier. Is was a great time and Im glad that I got to share it with my Father. Thanks to everyone who helped me out.

Neat buck man, congrats. I love it when the main beams almost touch like that. Killing it with your dad makes it that much better! Congrats again,
