rcdinaz Report post Posted March 9, 2018 I am finally going to get out and chase turkey's this year so I made the mistake of researching a possibly new gun. Now I am more confused... seems a lot of articles on 20g now and new guns with pistol grips and such. Should I just take my SX3 12ga duckgun, or Franchi 20g, semi auto and throw a turkey choke on it or is a dedicated turkey (& coyote I guess) gun worth it. Looks like it would be around $500 . Also, like all hunting I am sure I will be hooked like crack after the first day of chasing turkeys so I am not torn up over buying a dedicated gun if it makes the experience better. I doubt a turkey can tell a difference hard to argue with any of the above especially GG's post. Most often the full choke that comes with the gun works the best just pattern your gun before you go out. Good luck it's not hard to become addicted to turkey hunting. az41mag Report post Posted March 9, 2018 Your SX3 should work fine. Just try some different choke tubes and turkey load combinations until you can get the pattern you want. Every gun is going to be different, but an Indian Creek choke with Winchester long beard shells has been excellent on my 870. I would also suggest adding some sights to your shotgun if it doesn't have them already. I personally like the Hi-viz sights since they show up well in low light, and they are adjustable (as opposed to just a bead front sight). Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
PRDATR Report post Posted March 9, 2018 SX3 with a turkey choke will be fine. Sights will help immensely especially in the 30-40 yard range. Use some heavy field loads to get an idea of the pattern and to adjust the scope then pick s turkey load and see where it patterns from there to get dialed in. AZbowhntr Report post Posted March 9, 2018 I shot my turkey with my grandpas Browning Automatic that I have. It doesn't even shoot 3" shells. I just patterned some turkey loads and went hunting. I always joke that I shot the dumbest turkey on the hill. He woke me up opening morning gobbling up the side of the hill from where I was camping. I was back in camp by 6:30.
