hi guys, i received a garmin etrax legend personal navagator for christmas from my girlfriend. I have never thought of getting one for myself but now that i have one i want to put it to good use. I've read the instructions and really can't get the feel of it. Do i need to download any information to the gps unit before i use? what about mapping on the unit? Does anyone have any good advice for me besides rereading the instructions. By the way, have a merry merry christmas .

Your unit has a built in basemap of just the major highways and city names. If you want any extra maps and detail on your unit then you are looking at another hundred dollars. You can only use Garmin's specific software for your unit. Do you have the regular legend or is it the Legend HCX?...the regular Legend only gives you 8MB of memory the HCX has an expandable slot for a micro-sd card. As far as maps go AZ with the new Topo 2008, is 61MB so if have the regular unit then you will not be able to upload a lot of maps. The older Topo cd is now really cheap if you can find it, for all of Az it is 32MB...so you can fit a 1/4 of Az on the unit. The only thing I use my GPS for is placing waypoints i.e if you find a waterhole or a good glassing point you can mark those on your GPS and always be able to find them again. The biggest use to me is when I go hunting I will place a waypoint where my truck is and then turn the unit off, and if I do need help getting back to my truck then I will turn the unit back on. Another thing that it helped me with was marking where my deer was, and then I went down to the bottom of the hill to wait for my friend, we were able to easily locate the deer in the dark with the unit. Another beneficial thing is being able to put in coordinates, so lets say your buddy has a camp up north, he could give you his coordinates and then you can put them in yours and should be able to find him exactly. The one thing I do not like about the legend is it does not have the digital compass or altimeter. With your unit you have to have at least 4 satelites picked up in order to get your elevation, and you have to be moving in order for the compass to work, which sometimes can be a little difficult getting to a waypoint with it. But you will get used to how it works the more you play with it..It is a great little unit. Hope this helps a little
