bullwidgeon Report post Posted October 19, 2004 (edited) I spent Saturday in 37A and we got into a bunch of quail, found some carp sheds, saw a bruiser carp buck, and saw 8 million hogs. As far as how the quail are in coues country I would assume from the large coveys we found in 37A that the gambels in coues country should be doing well. Bret M. azpackhorse Report post Posted October 19, 2004 I was down south saturday scouting and heard a few quail but opted to carry a rifle instead of scatter gun, did see a bunch of deer 50 or so and videoed some ok bucks. Haven't found the big guy yet, anyway the weekend before last I hunted quail up by Oracle and had 15 birds @ 10:00am and a muley shed. Bullwidgeon, not too many people chase them big muleys around 37a, I thought I was the only one. I have lived in that unit for 20yrs and have seen some real monsters but it's not like it used to be about 15yrs ago. I have two no fail spots that hold some big boys still, just got to be patient. stanley Report post Posted October 19, 2004 I was out in my traditional opening day stomping grounds in 37B and cleaned-up on the birds. Plenty of them in the regular spots, which means it's a good year! It's going to take lots of rain to bring the muleys back like they were in that country 20 years ago though. It used to be that we would regularly spot numerous mule deer and some large bucks on occasion while out bird hunting. The droubt has just killed some units... Focusing on final planning for my early COUES hunt down south now though. Nine days to go!!! Then back to the birds for the rest of the year.... Bird hunting is awesome!!! Dan H Report post Posted October 19, 2004 We hunted javelina in 37A this past Jan. and saw a lot of quail on cattle water holes. But some nice muley bucks are still in there. We saw a few nice ones cross the road from B to A,..2 weeks in row within 1.5 mi of each other at 4:30 in the morning. Got a shot at 1 4X4 and a bobcat the last weekend of the hunt. No kill though. We were in an area most people would look at and think TTTT!! there ain't nothing in that country but it was loaded. We saw one herd of 17 does one day. As for the javelina we hunted the same herd 3 weekends in a row and my J-13 call actually made them run. I think they have herd that call in there before and know its end results. Have fun Dan

Manamal Report post Posted October 19, 2004 With no Az tags in hand untill December archery, i've been hunting ducks in unit 1 and 6a as much as possible. It seems to be alot better than last year, lots of mallards and teal. Cant wait untill Fri. when the desert units open up, gonna scout some good spots today and pray for nasty weather up north to push some more birds down. I used to hunt quail like a maniac untill a couple years ago. I needed a new challenge and decided to learn how to hunt ducks. It is so cool when you see birds at a distance and sweet talk em into your spread!!! Do any other duck hunters cruise this site?Bullwidgeon?
stanley Report post Posted October 19, 2004 Alright treestandman1, I'll bite..... Let's get you out humping the hills/bluffs that line the sand washes that I hunt. Once you've chased a few coveys around those ridges & draws, you'll know it's not for women! Every year I swear to myself that I'm not going to chase any covey further than a single 'covey rise', but I somehow end-up chasing them all over the desert! Not a bad work-out.... Gotta find me a flatter place to hunt birds! S.
bullwidgeon Report post Posted October 20, 2004 (edited) Yep, There are some toads still walking in 37A. I got a pair of sheds from a buck I tried to kill a few years ago. With a 26 inch spread he scores 180 gross and was a perfect 4x4 with almost no deductions. I was within 50 yards of him several times throughout the year but couldn't find him during the rifle season. At least I have his sheds. I also have been known to kill a duck or two when the oppertunity arises. Last day of last years duck season in 37A no less Bret M. azpackhorse Report post Posted October 20, 2004 Some of the best duck hunt'n I've seen in Arizona was by redrock feedlot a couple of years ago, reminded me of Oregon, now it's all screwed up, can't hardly get back in there gotta take the long way around. I also saw two lions down in there and a whole buncha hogs, not javelina, bigg'ns...like 300 or 400 lb'ers.
peckl1 Report post Posted October 21, 2004 I was out yesterday, as treestandman1 would say, getting in touch with my femine side (quail hunting). I got 6 gambels and 6 scaled. And of all things got to thinking about politics. I read the other day in an outdoor magazine a quote from John Kerry. It had to do with what he called deer hunting. He said "I go out with my trusty 12 guage double barrel, crawl around on my stomach. I track and move and decoy and play games and try to out smart them. You know kind of play the wind. That's hunting." Well I got to thinking about this quote. He wasn't talking about hunting he got confussed. He was talking about politics. "I go out with my trusty double barrel mouth so I can talk out of both sides of it. I crawl around on my stomach like the snake that I am. I track and move and decoy around all the issues so no one knows what I just said. You know play the wind and answer the questions based on which way the wind is blowing today. Now that is politics." Just my 2 cents Lee

Rembrant Report post Posted October 25, 2004 peckl1, You don't think Kerry is a deer hunter based on the way he described his hunting methods? C'mon man, things are different when you live in Mass. I'll bet his 'outsmarting the deer tactics' work. Heck, he's got almost half the people in this great country faked out! Mike
