Couestracker Report post Posted February 26, 2018 Mentored a friend from Sweden on his first American big game hunt, in unit 19A. It was my first time hunting in this unit and my first Javelina mentoring gig. I spotted a herd late Friday morning running across a hilltop after hearing a couple of shots. After lunch, we hiked in looking for them to no avail, and we got hit by snow flurries! Saturday we hiked into an adjacent area, glassed up a couple of antelope. We were about to break for lunch when I spotted a herd back by the vehicle, 600 yards away. While I was watching 2 through my binos, a coyote came up to them and 1 javi chased it off! I counted 7 good sized Javis in the herd. We climbed down off the mesa we were on and got to within 50 yards. A couple of them heard us and ran off, but 1 stayed feeding, then presented a broadside shot for Hawke and he made a great shot. It made a 40 yard death run past us. The shot double lunged the boar. Hawke field dressed it and we headed back to camp to skin it out. He weighed 39.3 lbs. As it layed. Hawke with his first Javelina. Ready to skin it out.
