predator Report post Posted October 19, 2004 Hey ya'll, I was just wonderin' what kind of weather flux I can expect in 21 in December? My understanding is that snow is not all that uncommon, but I haven't really heard much about temps. I'm inclined to pack some light wool or fleece, what do you experts think? Oh, and since AZ didn't find it nice enough to include some regs.....what's the orange requirement, if any? Pred
az4life Report post Posted October 19, 2004 Predator You could see about anything in 21 during December. I have seen upper 80's and 20's for lows. Really Depends on where in the unit you go to. Since it goes from just outside of the valley to camp verde, you really have a big unit. Elevation Ranges from around 1300 to 5500 or so at the highest I would guess. Snow possible but not too common at least in large amount. Usually any snow melts off in a day or so on all but the nort sides of hills and bottoms of ravines. I generally layer up as I could get an 80 degree day and a 20-30 degree early morning. In the Coues areas, I would say to expect 20-30 mph wind with an average high of 60-65 and Rain is more common in Dec than other months so bring some extra rain gear just in case. Lots of generlities but the layer plan works well for whatever weather the sate throws at ya. Hunter orange is not required, but some amount is adviseable to keep those nearsighted trigger happy newbies from cutting your season short. Where are you coming from? Self Hunt, or Guided? Good Luck!
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 19, 2004 (edited) If you are from out of state this year you will have to wear blaze orange. We now have a vest for all out of state hunters that states your are from out of state in big black letters across the back remember things have changed a bit this year. Do not forget AZ is not a nice place anymore. Good luck on your hunt and do bring a coat. Edited January 1, 1970 by ARIZONA GUIDE
Rembrant Report post Posted October 19, 2004 One year camped down in an area with sagauros and woke up to 5" of wet snow. And socked in fog for half the day. Come prepared. Mike
treestandman1 Report post Posted October 19, 2004 Make sure you wear hunter orange and watch out for angry residents.
predator Report post Posted October 19, 2004 Youch!!! Will it help if I indicate upon my vest that I used an AZ application service and am using an AZ guide ....as in native, as in non-USO?!!!
Avion Report post Posted October 20, 2004 Hey predator, one of the coldest deer hunts for me was an Oct. hunt in 21. Had my coffee pot freeze in nov. wore short sleeves in dec. late hunt and longjohns aweek later for pigs. Just come prepared. Sit awhile and enjoy your hunt. KGAINES Report post Posted October 20, 2004 I also have a unit 21 dec. tag., and I agree with avion, be prepared for anything as far as the weather goes. If you are using a guide he should also let you know what you should be prepared for, will you be camping, high or low, will you be hunting high or low. As stated before this unit goes from desert to pines. As far as the orange goes you don't have to wear any, but you should carry some some to wear while moving around or while packing out your deer. Good luck to all and God bless
coueshunter Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Prettier: bring polypropelene underwear and just plan on layering for the cold. You should have some "rain gear" like cabelas dry plus stuff just in case it pours or snows. Bring some gloves because it gets cold glassing and holding onto the tripod. As for AZguides comment, he should learn to be cordial until he knows what someone is all about. Predator is not using USO and is a dedicated huntress that DOES NOT SUPPORT USO so back off. Thanks Pred for spending money on AZ tag and AZ guides.........Allen Taylor.......
treestandman1 Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Predator, Congradulations on drawing the December hunt in 21! You are in for some good coues hunting. As you probably know, the hunters of AZ are still a little ticked about USO's greed. You have nothing to worry about with regards to your safety.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Predator, Where are you from? Is Allen right that you are a dedicated huntress? We need more huntresses on this forum, so keep coming back and definitely let us know how your hunt goes. Take some pics and we can post them. Will this be your first coues deer hunt? And like everyone has said, pack lots of layers of clothing. Temps vary widely. You may be freezing in the morning and in a tshirt by afternoon. Or it may be freezing all day. You just never know. I find one of the best things I take with me is an insulated shirt and also a windproof, warm hat. Sometimes when you are sitting glassing for hours it gets pretty darn cold if it's windy. A windproof jacket is good too. Amanda
stanley Report post Posted October 22, 2004 I can vouch for Predator, in that I've seen pictures of many of the trophies she's killed over the past few years. She is absolutely a dedicated huntress puts the time & energy necessary in to make the most of all her hunts (and there are many...)! I'm looking forward to a good story & pics from this hunt for sure.... Good luck P! S. :-)
Kevin Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Welcome to the site! Almost as important as layering your clothing, is a good foam pad to sit on if you are going to sit behind glass in the mornings. Those rocks get mighty cold during the night and will chill you to the bone while sitting on them, besides they aren't very comfy! Being comfortable in the #1 secret to finding deer while glassing. If you are cold and fidgetting, you are less likely to see deer and much less patient. Good luck on your hunt! Kevin
Arizonabowhunter Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Predator, last year while hunting near Oracle my brother and I came upon a concrete trough that had a pump pumping water into it. We stopped to look to see if it was frozen over and sure enough it was. Tucson recorded a low of 19 degrees and who knows what it was like where we were at. I know we were pretty cold reason being my brother has one of those back packs that has a water bladder with a hose for him to drink from and that hose was frozen solid. My brother harvested a small 4 point muley that day, I also got an arrow in him but he claimed it because he hit it first. Just dress in layers!!!!!!
