Quality of Burros bucks

Recommended Posts

How big of bucks (Coues and Muleys) come out of the Burro's on a regular basis? With only 25 tags it seems like there should be some awesome bucks every year.

There are good bucks FOR NM that come out of there... I think people often think it is like the strip or something but compared to other states it is probably a joke. I think there are bigger dear else where... Mulies Unit 2 Coues Deer maybe 27

The Coues deer I don't know haven't managed to draw a tag, but ask them Silver City boys they can tell you. I think the Mule deer I took off the Burros last year is representative of Muleys in the area. He scores 155 I'll post a picture this afternoon.

I think that anytime a area gets a reputation of having some trophy potential that many people assume that there are monsters everywhere you look. Even on my Kaibab hunt a month ago we all shot nice deer but not monsters by any means. If you work hard in these so called trophy areas your chances are better for shooting a big buck, but there is never a guarantee! I've never hunted the Burros but I'll bet there are some real good bucks there if you work hard.

I would say that instead of quality we have quantity in 23, which could be considered quality to some. The burros have more coues per sq mile than 27, and the size of the trophy is probably about the same. My cousin Eric guides there and usually, if not always, pulls a monster out (monster being 100+).

As for mule deer, NM is not known at all for mule deer except unit 2. A good buck to be proud of down here is about 150-160, but like everywhere else theres going to be that 200+ deer somewhere in there. It just takes scouting, hard work, but mostly a ton of luck to take down a huge mulie here. Now that I am thinkin about it though, the rainfall this year has made antler growth above normal so there is another factor for you. There has been a nice 25-26 inch 5x5 that has been raiding my lawn...I wouldn't mind seeing one like that on my hunt  :D

Well hate to burst the 23 bubble, but since I am a native AZ transplanted to NM, I would not exactly say that 23 has a high quantity of whitetail compared to the AZ units, it would be a mediocre AZ whitetail unit. That being said it is still a fun hunt and for NM it does have a high quantity of deer for NM standards. Now the Burros are a different sort of animal, I imagine thicker deer densities, but they are not waiting in line to jump in front of your crosshairs. AG

Couesslayer, when you say you have quanity in 23 you must be referring to the Burros specificly because the areas I've hunted in 23 outside the Burros have extremley low coues deer numbers. In fact I would say that in 23 outside the Burros there is quality not quanity.

For what it's worth the sheds in my avatar picture come from 23 outside the Burros, and with a 12 inch spread they would break 120 inches.

Here is my .02 on the burros. Yes there is good quality bucks in the burros. However, I believe that you can find just as good quality in other areas of SW NM, if not better. The thing about the burros, as stated above, is that by NM standards there is a higher concentration of deer than in other areas. This does not necessarily mean that the quality is better, you may just have more of a greater chance at seeing those bigger bucks. If research is done in any of the other units I gaurantee you that you can find coues, maybe not in high numbers, but coues none the less.

I appreciate the input. I have been putting in for the burros for some time now and it just occurred to me that I hardly ever hear of a big buck from there. I am sure there are big bucks in there. Seems like with only 25 tags that people would kill at least one great buck per year. Does anyone have pics of any bigguns from there they would be willing to post? I would love to see them.
