no worries Report post Posted December 18, 2017 What distance would you use a 3-15 VX5 to hunt deer size game? Is it effective out to 800 plus yards? Thx and Merry Christmas. Jim
HuntHarder Report post Posted December 18, 2017 Quick answer is Yes. I have 6.5-20's on my long range rigs, but rarely use 20x. I usually find myself shooting 12-15x. This is plenty of magnification for most hunting situations.

Red Sparky Report post Posted December 18, 2017 Depends on your eyesight. My glasses are about 15X and I can't see squat with them off and can't see to 800 yards with them. No in all seriousness a 15X should be fine. The more magnification the more mirage you get. I have a fixed 10X on my .222 and have no problem to 600 yards. CatfishKev Report post Posted December 19, 2017 I had asked a similar question for kids. Since then started a sniper series on youtube and like trphyhntr mentioned tons of snipers use 10 power scopes. It really just comes down to What you are comfortable with. roninflag Report post Posted December 19, 2017 Jim- what size are your 500 yard groups?
no worries Report post Posted December 21, 2017 Ron I haven't measured groups at 500 since the last load development. I did hit an 8 inch plate 3 for 3 at 500 meters with the new load, but didn't measure the group. I'm guessing I'm a little over 1 MOA at 500.

roninflag Report post Posted December 27, 2017 for me the rifle/cartridge and wind are limiting factors; not a scope of the quality and power of the one you mentioned.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted December 27, 2017 I have a 3-15×50 Premier Heritage Light Tactical on my .280AI. I was shootingbit at 1400+ on rocks smaller than deer sized game. I managed to shoot a 2.9" 3 shot group at 926 yards with it. I also shot a coyote at 1365 yards with a scope set on 17x. Plenty of scope magnification for that shot.
