What Shotgun?

Recommended Posts

I need a shotgun recommendation for a 15 year old. He will primarily be using it for bird hunting and some varmint hunting. I'm don't really have a $$ cap although something under $500 would be nice.

Thanks

Being a 15 year old I would say go ahead and get the 12 gauge. JMO.

I'm for sure going 12G......should I get an express or wingmaster? what about the remington 1100?

For mainly quail and dove, I would choose a 20 guage. The gun will be lighter to carry all day. The semiautomatic will absorb recoil with its gas system. A Remington or Benelli semi-auto would be nice. Check the fit for length, cast, pitch.

Remington 870 express in 2/34 and 3 inch. Less than $300 at HATE TO SAY IT "WALMART" with a 30$ mail in rebate from Remington. Comes with a modified screw in choke, laminated stock, matte finish. Proven in the trenches.

I second the 870 express. Its a great gun for the price.

870 as well. I shot one for many years with no problems at all. I can't remember who its was it they put the 870 as #2 of the top 50 shotguns ever made.

870 is a great starter! Still Other options to improve and upgrade to later but he will be able to get confidence and won't feel like he has a POS either.

870 EXPRESS is a true friend. I have beat mine into the dirt and still right on the button. Quail, dove, duck, geese, and turkey, just cant miss'em. Its been in and out of water, used as a ore. Its a great gun for money.

I too vote for the 20 ga. Not because he is 15, but because it more enjoyable to carry and shoot.

I have an 870 and it sits and collects dust since went with an 1187 20 years ago. A 12 gauge 1187 will kick about the same as a 20 ga. 870. Since then I got another 1187 in trap model, a 1100 spl field for quail, 1187 20 gauge, and a super black eagle for blasting ducks. Do it right the first time, spend the extra money.
