Upgrading all the family rifles/scopes this year. Can't afford precision matched rings. Is getting a $100 lapping kit for the cheap sets I have the next best thing? Any suggestions for the cheaper stuff to get the most value so to speak?

Ive been using warne vertical split rings with no lapping and have no problems. Get the warne torque wrench unless you already have an in lbs wrench.

Also Wheeler has a lapping kit for about $50.

What diameter rings are you using?

Yes, do it. I bought the kit that has the 1" and 30mm set up. There are videos on YouTube that has a few different ways to do it. Watch a few of them and then do yours.

I see it as another way to maximize shooting. Anything that can be done to improve, do it.

What is your price range for rings? I have used valdada rings a few times when something like Nightforce or badger was not in the budget. I'm pretty impressed with their Machining at a $90 price tag.

I have both 1" and 30mm. Looking to spend not more then $50 per pair. Wanting something a bit better then walmart stuff but can't do like $100 rings. I suppose it's worth mentioning upgraded scopes to me is a few crossfire scopes a prostsff and a viper. I'm upgrading just from the factory mounted optics.

Look at sites like here and www.snipershide.com for used higher quality rings. Warne and Weaver tactical are decent.

Burris signature zee rings. Cost about $60 and no lapping required and the plastic inserts allow you to add cant to your scope without the added cost of a rail.

Thanks for all the responses. Someone mentioned lapped rings are more likely to leave marks on the scopes. Would you guys recomend a light layer of spray paint where you lapped?

I have owned quite a few rifles and I have never lapped a set of rings. I use Warne or Nightforce rings and have yet to have a scope slide in the rings.

That light ring mark from a lapped ring is easily removable from your scope finish with 0000 steel wool and WD40. Not necessary to use paint. Before lapping rings bed the bases with JB weld.

I never lap quality rings.

Every scope I own now sits in Seekins rings, and I have never gotten a ring mark on a scope from them when torqued properly.

Some other rings I would own trust for top tier optics would be American Rifle Co. and Badger Ordinance.

Have you considered rather than upgrading all of your scopes this year doing one at a time and getting better quality scopes and rings? I have never regretted the purchase of higher quality scopes or rings. I can not say that about cheaper ones.
