Handgun carry during archery hunt

Recommended Posts

I know I was reading some post somewhere about it being legal to carry a handgun during an Archery hunt. Is that correct, I think it said it must have a 5" or shorter barrel and no scope I believe. I would call AZGFD, I was unable to find it in the reg's. Figured I could have it answered before I got out of work tonight.

Thanks,

Tom

barrell must be no longer the 6 inches the gun must have just iron sights and your legal.

Good deal, I would hate to fling an arrow at a kitty cat and have him get a bit upset with me. haha, I will just call my lil friend, .45....

Thanks bud,

Tom

That would get you in trouble, handgun is for personal protection only, that would be considered hunting. Just a word of caution.

Surry bud, let me refrase that. I have heard of this in the past and dont want it happening to me. You shoot a bear or lion with your bow, and he charges you. I will NOT rely on getting another arrow nocked and trying to stop him before he stops me, I.E. personal protection, .45. Yeah I know it is rare but I would rather have it than not.

This info came out in the October 2006 Hunting Highlights on the azgfd.com I printed it and carried it with me for a while just in case I ran into an uneducated warden. Here is a link to the info. 2nd column down on the right side, 7th paragraph down. 6" max nonhunting handgun.

If you have that happen to you and a G&F officer checks you, hide your deer tag. You can take a lion with pretty much whatever you want. The handgun rule is for archery only hunts, and this time of year there is only deer and javelina archery only hunts. If you happen to shoot a deer on an archery only hunt and you are packing a handgun, I can gaurantee the officer will do a lead check, hope the deer wasnt wounded during a rifle hunt.

Thanks for the tip to the article. I will now carry my .45, allot of illegals in the area, and am unsure of the desperate measures they may take to be free.

I thought they reversed that rule back to no handguns.... Better double check I guess.

They can reverse it all they want. I am all for following rules, but that is the one I will break. I'd rather be in court alive than dead in the desert.

I like the ,"....rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!"

Just an FYI for all us archery hunters who want to carry a handgun during archery season. Per AZ game and fish dept.

Just aHello,

The regulations state that it is illegal to posses while on an restricted hunt any method of take other than what is listed. The law has not changed; however, our department has passed a department wide directive that states no Game and Fish officer will penalize any individual who is carrying an non-hunting type firearm while participating in an Archery only hunt. The directive also defines a non-hunting type fire arm to have a barrel length of 6 inches or less and has no additional electronic or scoped sighting other than steel sights. You shouldn't have much problem with it but do keep in mind that this is an Arizona Game and Fish department directive and other law enforcement agencies are not required to follow it. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Thanks,

Chris Anstead
