Online Shooting supply Store Question

Recommended Posts

A friend and I are considering opening an online shooting supply store. What types of things do you guys like and dislike from current online stores? Do you have any website design suggestions? What type of gear would you like to see that you currently have a hard time finding in one place?

Thanks,

Adam

I'm no expert but maybe you can use a VPN and do a startup in another state so we don't get dinged with sales tax. Set it up so you are just a broker (middleman), no stock and markup 5 to 8%.

I order most of my stuff online from midway or brownells and the biggest barrier is the shipping costs. I always find myself in a situation where I want to order around 40 or 50 dollars in stuff but don't want to pay 12 to get it shipped.

if you want something brought from another location and delivered to you there's going to be a cost associated with that. It's not something you can avoid in an online ordering situation. A simple package from Midway to you will have to be handled by multiple employees and travel in multiple vehicles along with being handled in multiple sorting hubs. The employees equipment and Facilities to provide the service all come at a cost. I have spent over 30 years working in the Freight industry and on many occasions have delivered shipments where the cost of Transportation exceeded the purchase price of the product.

I find it funny that everyone doesn't like paying for shipping on products. It is a cost associated with doing business. If you want "free" shipping you had better be prepared to pay higher prices on the products you are ordering to pay for that cost of business.

Take a package down to the UPS store and try and have them ship it for you. I doubt you will be able to get package that is only a few pounds shipped to anyplace for less than $10-12.

I work at a good size wholesale air conditioning company and we have a pretty decent FedEx rate, and I can't ship a package across Phoenix for less than $7-8.

I really appreciate everyone's opinions. Personally I like the sites that are easy to navigate and have reasonable prices. I try to keep a fair balance between buying local and buying out of state. I typically buy enough stuff in order to not pay shipping.
