cole_train Report post Posted October 23, 2017 Hey guys new member here. I'm from Nebraska and addicted to elk hunting! I was steered over here from another forum who told me this is the place to go for talking about Arizona hunting so here I am. I drew a unit 1 late rifle tag with 4 points. I'm pretty dang excited to get down there. I have a few questions for those who would be so kind to visit with me. 1. What kind of weather is typical there at the first of December? I'm assuming we should prepare for snow. 2. I'm there for the entire week and will be there a few days early to scout. I'm not concerned with eating the tag if the right bull doesn't show up but don't want to pass something I shouldn't on a late season hunt. What should I be looking for on this late season hunt? I'm assuming antlers will be busted up a bit. I've never hunted elk past October so this will be a new experience. I know unit 1s reputation for big bulls but I'm guessing the late season is a different animal. 3. Is an ATV necessary to get around? I'd sure like to not have to drag a trailer out there if I could help it. I've got a friend of a friend who lives in Alpine who has given me some pointers on areas to check out so I think I have a good start to go with my scouting days prior to the hunt. I'm planning to cover ground and glass a lot if the country lends itself to glassing. I'm pumped to head to your state and enjoy a week and half in some new country!

105Coues Report post Posted October 24, 2017 This is a very good hunt imo. Size of a shooter depends on you. Whether u have shot an elk or not. If you get out of the truck and wear out a little boot leather, u should get a crack at a nice 6pt. Weather will be cold and windy although our cold may be warm for you. Lol. Access is good, quads are nice for getting one out but this unit is pretty easy to get around with in a truck. My family have been on it twice and shot a 340 and a 325 6x6s. Let me know if you have any more questions.
105Coues Report post Posted October 25, 2017 I just reread my post and it made it sound too easy. I guess I should add that we spent a lot of time scouting to do as well as we did. Don't want to give you false hope on the quantity of big bulls. There are some big ones but they are few and far between. I wouldn't pass anything you would be happy with if it were me. Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted October 30, 2017 Hate to admit it but take it from a geezer that has hunted the late hunts for about 40 years..........the late hunts are for the young bucks that have plenty of energy to get away from other road hunters into the rough spots........and can also tolerate the strenuous and cold snowy weather. Hope that the snow holds off until after the hunt. Otherwise it cuts down on the huntable real estate....... and puts most of the hunters in highly concentrated areas dancing cheek to cheek with other hunters!
