Just what we need, another Kaibab Karp!

Recommended Posts

My father was lucky enough to draw the 12A west late hunt on the Kaibab. My father had done this same hunt some 15 years ago and still had the topos marked with his honeyholes. We knew coming in that this is a migration hunt and following individual bucks would prove very difficult so we did not scout much but rather looked for terrain that would be best given the temperature and time of year. The first day we stayed low and froze our a** off thanks to sub 10 degree weather. It got so bad we started making fires at our glassing locations just to keep from shivering so bad we couldnt see through the binos. The next day we ended up in the upper burn portion after hearing of some big bucks being sighted and killed. It proved to be a near perfect place, it allowed a longer viewing distance and also contained very very tall grass which the deer seemed to love. We hunted hard all this past weekend and passed up a few 170-175 bucks to hold out for that stereotypical kaibab buck. I had to leave on Sunday to drive all the way back to Tucson before classes started on monday and as luck would have it my dad got a shot. He shot at the buck of his dreams just hours after i left but couldnt connect due to the plethora of burned jack pines getting in the way. So with hopes high of seeing another biggen, he set off for another few days of hunting with long time family friend Ty Goodman. Well it wasnt a day later before he had a buck on the ground. I strained my ear to the phone as he was describing it.

While he claimed it was no Kaibab trophy, I sure dont agree. He doesnt have and junk and is missing an eyeguard but other than that a great harvest. And that night in camp they had a Condor fly in and land on their truck. It stayed their all night and would not leave them alone despite there being no food left outside or given to it. So the next day they called the appropriate people about it and they came right away, captured it, and said it would be held in captivity for 2 years to somehow train it not to be social to humans. I thought is sounded crazy but i guess it does work and those things can live to be over 50 years old so at least its not ruining its whole life.

Anyways i finally took some pictures of the hunt. let me know what ya think...

Ive seen some pics of some monsters that came out of there this year. Down at Bear Mountain they have some up on the board and Howie scored on a toad thats hanging on the cieling. Worth going down to take a look.

My taxidermist's son shot a 222" buck in Kaibab this year and they were saying it was the biggest buck killed so far this year with the closest being like a 212" buck. Don't know if this still holds true but that is a monster buck none the less.

I'd be surprised if a 222 buck was the biggest unless you're talking net score. Opening morning a guy shot a 43 inch wide buck that I think would easily score more than that. Perhaps it's the buck that Cory's talking about. I personally measured the spread on this buck so I know it's no rumor.

Grizzly, I was in camp with Howie, and he did shoot a real nice buck. We took 4 nice bucks in 3 days!

Here's a link to another website with the 43 incher. You have to scroll down nearly to the bottom.

tell your dad congrats on the buck. would love to see the one that he missed!

yep, 43 inches wide and score right around 240. seen all the pictures, guess it was shot very close to a road and very close to the hunters pickup. pure blind dumb luck, wish i had some of that stuff
