Average day?Peak of the Rut?

Recommended Posts

When is the peak of the rut. If I am able to make, it down there During the peak of the rut and a dark moon. How many deer a day on average should I see? Or let me put it this way say I hunt from daylight to dark and see 10 deer should I stay in the same general area or make my move to a different spot.

Thanks Gabe

Ahh the rut. Will we ever know. The earliest i've seen the coues rut peak (in my very short life) has been 1st to second week in january but usually more like third to last week in jan.

It may depend on latitude, the farther north the earlier the rut if they are like mule deer.

Coues are basically concentrated in the southern half of the state and a scattered population a little farther north?

I would say the first two weeks of Jan are pretty close to peak in AZ. The farther north you go, the earlier the peak. When I hunt down in Sonora, Mexico, peak seems to be at the very end of January.

here is a link to the biology page on this site that has a chart showing times of the various life stages of the coues deer based on research by AGFD in the Santa Rita mtns. They found peak to be in Jan.

And as to your question of how many deer you see during the rut, it's a tough one to answer because it depends on where you are hunting and how you are hunting. If you are in an area of high coues deer density, there maybe 6-12 deer per square mile. And you certainly don't see all the deer in a given square mile. But if you are glassing a 2-3 square miles you might see 25 deer. Or you could be doing well to see 3 bucks in a square mile. Depends on deer activity, amount of vegetation cover, and the method you are using to find the deer.

He isn't e-scouting, he's asking behavior questions. What the heck is wrong with that. Isn't that why we're here??? Did he ask about a spot or even a unit??? As a matter of fact he offered to help with any Colorado questions we might have in a different thread. Don't be the reason he stops coming to this website.

colorado ultra mag, don't be affraid to ask the questions you've been asking, you've been very respectful and have asked very good questions. If the weather keeps going the way it is and its a late wet winter like I suspect it will be, there should be a strong rut this year peaking around the 6th-7th of Jan. The cool thing about the desert southwest is that the rut lasts alot longer than other places. You should see rutting activity throughout Jan., especially when the weather cools off and it gets overcast. As far as how many deer... it only takes one good one to make a hunt! Honestly, the G&F website provides great info but don't be affraid to get a little mavrick and strike out on your own. When you get down here, go with your gut, its usually right anyway!

I personally agree with Scott. If your not within that two day window... then you better have some sort of a back up plan.
