Coues24A Report post Posted November 28, 2007 I am looking for a new scope to put on my 300wsm. I use it to hunt Coues or Antelope. It has come down to the Nikon Monarch 4x16x42, Leupold VXII 4x12x50 or 4x12x40 AO. I am leaning to the Leupolds. Whats more important a 50mm obj. or AO? firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted November 28, 2007 If I was you, I would save up and get the vxIII or vari X III line of leupold. They take quite a jump in quality over the VXII. In MY opnion, Nikon are decent scopes, but over priced for what they are.
devinv Report post Posted November 28, 2007 i have the nikon buckmaster on my rifle and couldnt be happier, the glass is clear and has good light transmission, sure it isn't as good as the german glass but it is a good glass and holds it's own, maybe get the nikon, save a little money, and get some good 15x binoculars, if you don't already have some. SunDevil Report post Posted November 28, 2007 casey you are crazy. I would go with the nikon but get in the 44mm objective. I personally do not prefer the 40mm and the 44mms are a little less expensive than the 50mms.
TwoGuns Report post Posted November 28, 2007 i spent the money on my leupold 3-9x50 and think it was a good decision. so many times you will be shooting at first/last light, and the bigger objective is really nice. i was amazed at how well you could still see/shoot in very low light. mikep35 Report post Posted November 28, 2007 Get the leupolds, with the 50mm obj. you'll be happy you did. I have the VXIII and I couldn't be happier. ( Unless I had swarovski)
cjw2222 Report post Posted November 28, 2007 one more for the leupolds. just put the vx-L with the adaptive 56mm objective and the B&C reticle on my new 300wsm and couldnt be happier. awesome awesome clarity. blows the older leupolds even out of the water. i would say vx-III or above

Red Rabbit Report post Posted November 28, 2007 How about the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 AO with the Rapid Z 800 reticle? http://www.zeiss.com/c1256bcf0020be5f/Cont...52571d700377d7e I find the Conquests to be clearer than the Leupold VXIII. With a 50mm objective, you will likely need higher scope rings for the objective bell to clear the barrel. This may raise your cheek weld from the stock. You should find the 44mm bright enough for all the hunting hours, unless you are going to hunt varmints and hogs at night in Texas.
TAM Report post Posted November 28, 2007 I know you're comparing the Leupold and Nikon, but I like the direction that Red Rabit is going. I own a Zeiss Conquest and I personally think that it is the best quality scope out there for the money right now! How does the conquest compare in price to the others? AzPacknHorns Report post Posted November 29, 2007 I topped my new 270wsm with the Leupold vari x III 4.5x14x50 with the b&c reticle and love it, super clear, good low light gathering, and the b&c reticle is really accurate.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted November 29, 2007 Gabe, your scope must have gotten knocked off 0 on your/our deer hunt based on where you hit your buck compared to where you were aiming! :D
Coues24A Report post Posted December 9, 2007 OK. I went to Cabelas Bargain Cave and found a Leupold VX III 4.5 X 14 X 40 A.O. with the Boone & Crocket reticle. It was $499, the manager came down to $470, so I bought it. It seems to be very clear even today in the cloudy weather. I can't wait to put it on my 300wsm. Thanks everyone!
