Brass choice

Recommended Posts

Almost done with my 6.5 Creedmoor, and trying to decide on what kind of brass.

Nosler, Lapua, and Hornady would be my top choices, any recomedations and why you use what you use would be great. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Nosler. Lance just finished load on mine and brass had very very little difference in weight between brass

Yeah I read that the are weight sorted within a half grain, wondered if my other two options did the same. Can't really find anything on the internet with an exact answer. I would think especially with the price of Lapua they would also.

I always start and finish my load development with nosler. The hornaday brass I have checked had a wide range of weights

Saw the weight sorted of claim on the Nosler box and the skeptic in me put all the cases on the scale. The 25 cases were all within 0.9 grains low-to-high. The brass was 300RUM which weighs close to 300 grains. The weight variance for the Box would be down around 0.3%.

I have lapua brass for my creedmoor. No complaints, the price is high initially, but it pays for itself over time.

But be aware if you go with lapua that they use small rifle primers for their 6.5 creedmoor cases. I had to purchase a a couple new tools to work with the srp because all my other rifles use lrp.

I also saw that, does that affect the way the powder burns from using a smaller ignition source? Should my powder choice vary based on that? I was planning on using IMR 4831, it's what I have on hand. That will be my next question. I'll probably go with nosler just wanted to see what you guys like using.

If I was shooting a 6.5 CM, I would definitely go Lapua brass. My choice of brass if available is in this order.

1. Lapua (especially since they are doing the small primer pocket) Absolutely top quality brass. Weight sorting should be within .8-.9 grains, maybe better. My .260 cases were within .6 grains across 205 pieces. Fully prepped. Run it through a neck sixer and load it up.

2. Nosler. Even though Norma makes Nosler brass, Nosler goes the extra step of weight sorting. Extremely high quality. Every batch I have worked with in all cartridges has been within 1 grain across lot numbers. Fully prepped. Run it through a neck sizer and load it up.

I personally do not care for Hornady brass at all.

As for the small primer pockets, look at the other cartridges that use them and decide. All known for their accuracy. .220 Russian (used for 6 PPC) 6BR Norma, 6.5x47L, and .308 Palma cases. Read up on them.

I went Hornady with CM. Once I weighed it I put it aside and bought Nosler

My 300 win mag is using Nosler brass and it is really nice.

My 6.5x55 is going to be using lapua brass when I start working with it. It needs a scope first though.
