Guest oneshot Report post Posted September 13, 2017 This is being treated as a 'cecil-the-lion" dealy by many local "news' stations, trying to advance their anti-agenda, on social media, by some violent/non-factual comments to those that would partake in this Hunt... You may not like fb/instagram/twitter, but fact is, ALOT of ppl are spreading lies/half truths and supporters of Hunting need to join the convo... (When you can't choke-them-out (born in the wrong century damm-it), educating them may work, as a second best option...)
elkaholic Report post Posted September 13, 2017 state park employees along with park volunteers will harvest the bison -- no time schedule -- all meat to be donated to food banks- indian tribes and the volunteers who help no information if these people are qualified to hunt / field dress and transport the animals - who's paying for all that they turned down the G&F idea of allowing hunters to hunt inside park boundaries! But lately a lot of companies are only on those sites (no website) I've held out for years but now I think I may have to break rules and join. Still a maybe but if you want to live a normal "white/yellow pages life", it's done thru social media. Very sad.

AZ8 Report post Posted September 13, 2017 And the "hunt" doesn't begin until the road to the North Rim closes. In other words, they'll be "hunting" during possible heavy snow pack. One article I read is that they'll be utilizing snow mobiles and walking to get around. So, possible non hunting volunteers with no experience, heavy snowpack, 1,400 lb carcass. Yeah sounds like a great plan. <Sarcasm>

mbiewer Report post Posted September 13, 2017 Well, maybe if they weren't treating you like a "hired gun" , they would get more takers. The requirements, seem normal enough... but who is going to hike out 8 miles for a shot then leave everything behind for someone else. The article I read, said that the hunters wont get to keep anything. Sure its a free hunt, but I at least want some back strap. lol. (there's an informative article but I cant get the hyperlink to work... so copy and paste) http://knau.org/post/park-services-makes-plans-reduce-north-rim-s-bison-herd#stream/
Jazz Report post Posted September 13, 2017 Your article has more detail. Yeah.. if I can't keep the meat I have no interest.
stanley Report post Posted September 13, 2017 We'll see how this plays out. I myself, would like to maybe get involved if it ends-up being possible for 'average Joe' hunters to participate. All else being equal, whether the meat is donated or I get to keep it would not be the make or break for me participating. Would I like the meat? Of course! Would I still like to maybe take part in it just for the experience even if I don't get to keep the meat? You bet!! I am absolutely NOT a trophy hunter, but if all I ended-up with was a cool pic (trophy pic) and some good stories, then I would be in! Like I said though, there are LOTS of assumptions that would need to align for me to be genuinely interested. For instance, I am NOT going to hike 10 miles in the snow to do it! S. stanley Report post Posted September 14, 2017 Welfare recipients get bison meat for free is all I read. Did you actually read the article? It states: "The meat will be distributed to the state, volunteers who participate, food banks and Indian tribes." Here's another story that says details are still being worked-out. I suppose until things are final, it's all just 'stories & articles' anyway.... http://www.guns.com/2017/09/13/national-park-service-looking-for-hunters-to-thin-bison-herd-in-grand-canyon/
DesertBull Report post Posted September 14, 2017 Probably a good idea to wait until that road closes to keep all the rock lickers and tofu grillers from running around harassing everyone.
