Options for heavy duty poly tarp?

Recommended Posts

I just bought new awning poles to extend my awning 20' Google has let me down on finding a good tarp online. Which brand and colors do you like for providing cool shade from the az heat?

be careful to not go too cheap as although you may get "shade" you will not get uv protection. It will feel hotter under it than not under it.

I bought a advertising tarp from craigslist and cut it to size and put grommets in it. Will last 10 times longer than the poly tarps.

If you do go poly tarp, I recommend the heavy duty silver ones. Just my $.02

I was thinking of doing the same thing with the advertising tarp! How was it installing the grommets? Also do you feel the vinyl makes it hotter than a normal tarp?

Grommets are easy once you get the hang of it. It's not rocket surgery. The cheapy kits from walmart work just fine although they are not as efficient as a vice or plier type. The biggest challenge with the vinyl material is getting the hole punch to cut it where it is doubled up. That stuff is STRONG.

I think the vinyl is cooler as it cuts more sun and provides UV(as far as I could tell).

It is a bit heavy and more cumbersome than a poly tarp though. Hard wrangle with one person.

I get the heavy duty canopy tarps in white, from the canopy guy at Park & Swap. He's got the pipes, fittings, bungees, tarps.

Pretty sure that is who I purchased a vinyl tarp from about 5 y

ears ago to put under the tent. I was pretty expensive but very high quality. I believe it was a 22oz one 10x14 and probably weighs 15 pounds.

Try the wall tent shop, without fly over your tent the sun will ruin the canvas.
