fatbastard Report post Posted September 3, 2017 Hey all, Just wondering if anyone has first hand experience with different seating plugs in the RCBS dies. I have a box of Hornady 180 grain xtp that gets crushed before I can finish seating them in both the 10mm and .40 S&W. By getting crushed I mean that the hollow point starts to cave in. I have tried both seating plugs that came with the dies, expanding the cases a tad more, seating without crimping, etc. I found additional seating plugs for the dies that are specifically for Speer Gold Dots and was thinking about picking them up. Wanted to see if anyone has used them on XTP'S with success or any other seating plug options out there before I take the plunge. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Hoss50 Report post Posted September 3, 2017 Flare the brass then seat them without crimp. Crimp as a sperate step. I have to do this with alot of magnum pistol ammo. 357, 44, 45lc, etc. If I load it hot I like to make sure I have a good crimp on it. Sometimes the dies will start to crimp before the bullet is fully seated and mess up the round. That is why I now seat that ammo in 2 separate steps. Seat, then crimp. I stopped after only a couple of failures.You have your seating die improperly set up. Back the seating die out and then screw the seating stem in. Have been seating in the RCBS die and got a Lee factory crimp die (which I had already ordered for a bulge buster kit) so I have been using 2 separate presses to complete the rounds. I did finally see the note in the instructions to back out the seating die for 10 mm so I will still try to get it down to one operation once I get a load dialed in.
