bowsniper Report post Posted October 8, 2004 I'm shopping for a bow for my 8 year old boy, and I'm trying to guess about what his draw length and weight will be when he is 11 or 12. If any of you have 11 or 12 year olds shooting, could you please post their draw length and weight that they are pulling? Thanks guys!
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted October 9, 2004 bowsniper most of the bow shops have available bows that will fit any individual regardles of age, size, draw length etc etc.In another words a 8 yeard old,12 or even an adult can shoot the same bow,so that's my sugestion, you can try one of those bows and see if you like it,I guaranteed you your son will love it. Good luck and take care. Ernesto C.
coues addict Report post Posted October 10, 2004 Bowsniper Cool name! you may want to check out the " Mathews Genisis". The bow weight is irrelevant and the draw length is also! This bow is really cool! I know an adult that shoots one just because they are so easy to shoot accurately. They shoot no matter what your draw length is. Good luck Coues Addict P.S. these bows were designed for your exact senario
.270 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 i'd go to walmart or someplace like it and see what kinda cheap compound they have for a starter. i'm thinking if you get em one with sights and a release and stuff that you'll just confuse em. remember the ol' "bionic ben"? got my oldest son one when he was just a tike. still have it over 20 years later. he shot the heck outta everthing with it. my youngest boy got a walmart special when he was real small too and shot all kindsa stuff with it. shot a squirrel within hours after he got it. i'd say start out real simple and let em fling arrows all over the place. get em some blunts and don't let em shoot anything pointy, unsupervised. i used to put blunts on and then tape maybe a rag or something over that too. it made a big ugly looking head on it, but no one ever got hurt by one. you'll be suprised at how good a little kid can get once he gets used to his bow. at things inside their realistic range, they'll outshoot you. really. treestandman1 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 I bought a browning bow from Sportsmans Warehouse in Phoenix that has an adjustable draw length from like 23-28 inches and a draw weight from 20-45 pounds. It is a great bow at a low price. I would definately look into it.
treestandman1 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 The genesis is good for target shooting but he will never be able to hunt w/ it.
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted October 11, 2004 Lark good point when you said "do not let them unsupervised" In addition to that remember that a Hunter Safety Course does help alot and if it's a COMBO course (fire arms and archery course) even better.Kids will learn that an arrow is sometimes mores devastating or dangerous than a bullet. runningbird Report post Posted October 13, 2004 I gave both of my boy's High Country bows when they were about 8, I chose the high country because the weight went from 25-40 and draw was adjustable from 23-28. these were real bow's which they both were able to hunt with when they were old enough. I think it's important to start them off with quality equipment to help keep them from getting discouraged. these bow's were pretty easy to tune and they were fast! they start shooting with tabs, easier to learn with plus no big deal when lost. For my daughter I bought her a nice pse recurve which shot very nice and was easy to draw. any good luck and most of all be patient and have FUN.
bowsniper Report post Posted October 14, 2004 Thanks for all the good comments. I have decided on the Browning Micro Midas 3, the draw length goes from 18" to 28" and the weight from 20# to 40#. bowsniper
