Jazz Report post Posted August 15, 2017 Kinda new to tripods and usage for photography- I use a Primos tripod for a rifle. But I'm starting to like the idea of getting them on camera. With the Primos, I have a screw and that's about it- there isn't a lot of panning up and down, left and right.. Would something like this fit on it, and that's enough to pan in all directions with a set of bino's? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1070028-REG/vanguard_ph_21_2_way_pan_head.html
AzDiamondHeat Report post Posted August 15, 2017 Yes, but you might not be happy with the movement. Lots of info on this site about good quality pan heads that aren't really much more expensive than what you are looking at. The difference between a better quality fluid head and what you are looking at is night and day though. Like many others, I started with the lesser expensive setups thinking they would be "good enough". If you are going to spend any significant amount of time doing this, do it right. The frustration level will go WAY down and help you to enjoy it more.
AZ_SAWBUCK Report post Posted August 15, 2017 I just bought the Vanguard Alta CA 233AT with the PH-30 head. Cant beat the weight stability and motion of the head for the price. On sale at Sportsmans and online for $89. Glassed a couple times with Swaro 15's and setup works great. Side Bar: Kind of weird when looking into these Vanguard tripods because they have so many models that are similar but have different heads, slight changes to the feet and legs. The box said it was a Alta CA 233AO, but the actual tripod was an AT. I specifically wanted the rubber feet not the balls with spikes, also wanted the PH-30 head vs the newer plastic design that they are putting on them. Legs on this model will spread wide like they should!
lancetkenyon Report post Posted August 15, 2017 I have a Primos tripod for shooting too. I will never, EVER, allow a pair of binos spotter, or camera to be mounted on it again. EVER. My son-in-law dumped my 15s over using it last year. Pannign sucks, stability sucks, height sucks if you are over 4'6". Light and stiff. Carbon fiber Manfrotto.
Swivelhead Report post Posted August 15, 2017 Spend the extra money on a fluid movement 2 way pan head. Fluid heads are slightly heavier but well worth the added weight.
cactusjack Report post Posted August 15, 2017 Figure it with this. Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick 2.

SunDevil Report post Posted August 15, 2017 so what would you recommend for a youth (12 year old)? want to keep it as light as possible. needs to probably fold up to < 18 inches to put in a day pack. does not to be very tall. does not need to be expensive. probably only put 10 powered binos on it. GreyGhost85 Report post Posted August 21, 2017 I bought a zomei carbon fiber tripod off amazon last season and replaced the head with a manfrotto 700rc2 head. Very light, sturdy and compact tripod for about $200 with the different head. I've spent a good 100 hours on it at this point and am still very happy with the purchase. I've been through a lot of tripods and for the price, this setup would be really hard to beat.
