Jazz Report post Posted July 30, 2017 Hi guys, My son just got a 300 win mag for his Bday- and we're putting it together. It was fairly straightforward, but I had a question about the bolt. The (what I think is called) the cocking piece pin on the bolt was in the *up* position- trying to slide the bolt home was impossible in that position. Youtube suggested moving the pin to the *down* position. It slid right in. The instructions say you should never have to mess with it. Anyone have any similar experiences? Is it ok to move it down? I don't see how it would've slid home any other way.
PRDATR Report post Posted July 30, 2017 I have a Savage Axis and on it I have to pull back on the trigger and push down on that part to remove or insert the bolt. Good resource. http://www.savageshooters.com/forumdisplay.php?17-110-Series-Bolt-Action-Rifles
STOMP442 Report post Posted July 30, 2017 Yes that needs to be in the down position to insert the bolt. If you look down the rear of the rifle you will see a notch on the right side in the bolt raceway for that to fit. Then when you cock the bolt it rotates that pin to the up position and the rifle is ready to fire. As long as you hear a good click when you cycle the bolt and dry fire it you should be good to go.
