mattys281 Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Deer aren't any tougher to kill than people are. I'm kinda thinking a couple million dead guys can't be wrong on this one. If it's what you want to hunt with, then go for it. Just know the range limitations of your entire system (you + the weapon) and you'll be fine.
Rock30golf Report post Posted July 29, 2017 17 inch barrel. 124 grain or should I go bigger. I am setting this up for my son as a back up. 75 yards max
300RUM Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Go to the 147 grain bullet, it will provide the most energy and better penetration.
Rock30golf Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Whats a good bullet?
Hoss50 Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Hornady XTP or the Barnes all copper HP or something along those lines is what I would be after. Some of the hot load companies like Under wood or Buffalo bore should have a good load.
300RUM Report post Posted July 29, 2017 http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/calibers.html The ballistics with the 9 mm in a longer barrel look like this. You will be no where near the performance of a 6" .357 revolver. 9 mm in a 4" barrel 125 Hydra-shock 1061 fps 147 Hydra-shock 951 fps 9 mm in a 17" barrel 125 Hydra-shock 1250 fps 147 Hydra-shock 1069 fps .357 mag. in a 6" barrel 125 Hollow point 1702 fps 158 Hydra-shock 1485 fps Yes, the 9 mm has claimed millions of victims but keep in mind many sustained multiple hits from a burst of submachinegun fire. By using the pistol round you loose the advantage of hydrostatic shock from a large temporary wound channel produced by a high velocity rifle projectile. Energy may be more comparable to an arrow but you lack the large cutting diameter of a broadhead that causes hemmorhaging. A broadside shot and marksmanship that hits the heart and/or penetrates both lungs will be critical.
Hoss50 Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Those are standard velocity ballistics though. If you are running +p or +p+ you will be in a much closer comparison. I shoot winchester ranger sxt in 127gr that are 1250fps from a pistol barrel.
