SilentButDeadly Report post Posted November 12, 2007 I kind of got in over my head suggesting to my 70 year old grandfather-in-law-in-law that I could put him on a monster Coue's buck in unit 33. After the first morning of dragging him across the hills I realized that Coue's country is NOT the kind of place that you take a 250 pound ex-major league baseball player with mild arthritis. Things were pretty rough going the first couple days, only saw (and promptly lost sight of) 2 bucks out of about 20 deer. Day three, with sore legs, butts, backs, and egos we finally turned up a couple of bucks. Everything came together though. I was on a ridge a mile away from my father-in-law, Ernie, and grandfather-in-law-in-law, Ken. I spotted the bucks down the ridge from where they had set up and guided them toward them, Ernie helped Ken close the distance on the bucks. They took off their shoes (bowhunter style!) and closed the last 150 yards to within 50. The bucks dropped down into a canyon, I lost sight of them, and was left watching the guys point out the bucks and begin firing. Ken put two out of three rounds through the buck's heart, off hand at 200 yards with his 7mm mag. I came down off my ridge, and with the help of my Vizsla located the buck 50 yards from where they last saw him (100 yards from where he put the 1st bullet into his heart!) I'm sure alot of hunters will have the same story as we did - lots of other hunters, saw some does but not any bucks. Even though the buck is only 60 inches, it was the hunt and the effort that made it memorable (like any Coue's hunt), and we can say that we went out there and did the best we could and came home successful. Also what team did he play for? to be honest, I'm not sure which teams he played for, I do know that he played in the 1950's for a Cubs developmental squad...
