rszkutak Report post Posted October 16, 2017 I pulled the same hunt as well, i will be in 12 AE. I've been up there scouting twice already this year the most recent was 2 weeks ago where it was windy as heck and all i saw were doe's and yearling's plus a couple spikes, no big monster's. I'm kinda in the same boat as well, my hunting buddy who was going to come along with me had to cancel because his wife shattered her ankle a couple weeks ago and she's likely going to have surgery on it the day before opening day. I'm more concerned about his wife than the hunt so naturally i'm not even remotely upset. I've identified quite a few places to camp which are close to 67 but far enough away to not hear the road. As this is my first time in 12AE I've also paid Duwane Adams for some help in getting me on them and reducing my time spent looking for them. Out of respect for Duwane Adams and his awesome services he provides I of course won't pass along the info he has given to me but some of the tips above are surely going to put you in the area of them. From my recent trips up there, here are some things i've learned: Sight in your rifle AT elevation, coming from Yuma to the bab you're talking about +7,000' +/- elevation change, your POI is GOING TO SHIFT due to air density changes. I was shocked my rifle shifted 2.2" from Phoenix to by Jacob's lake, but I'm also hunting suppressed as well so that will also play into the shift. Glass, Glass, and more glass. Wear our your butt and not your shoes. Some of the area has some steeper canyon's in it, be prepared to potentially take cross canyon shots if the situation arises (I've lased quite a few canyon's there in more open area and they are between 300-500 yards). Fuel is expensive at Jacob's Lake, about $0.80-1.00 more per gallon than Flagstaff. The last "reasonable" fuel stop is Lee's Ferry which is still higher than flag but not nearly as high as jacob's lake. Bring extra fuel if you can, i'm bringing 30 gallons of additional fuel and 30 gallons of additional water. I really don't want to leave camp to go get anything so I'm trying to pack it all in. Jacob's lake has limited food items and of course it's a bit expensive as well (the muffins are cookies are freaking fantastic though). The closest grocery store is in Fredonia AZ (Natures Grocer which seems to cater to vegan / organic stuff), which is about 25 or so miles away, Kenab UT is 40 miles away and should have a larger selection of stores there. In Kenab Glazier's Market is open till 10pm just in case they need something after sunset and the lodge at jacob's lake doesn't have it. If she needs to really power shop the closest Walmart is in St. George or Page both of which are about 100 miles each way. Are they pulling a trailer or are they camping in a tent? One of my missions on my scouting was to locate a few spots to park a trailer in as well as throw up a tent. I will be pulling my hybrid trailer up. I've identified about 8-10 spots already that can accommodate a travel trailer and some of them are spotty for a trailer but would be great for camping. I've found spots off 205 and off 200 all of them within 3 or so miles of the 67. Temps at night are likely going to drop into the high 20's to mid teen's so please plan accordingly in that regards. I do not believe their are any bears in Kaibab so the largest predator they will have to worry about is mountain lion, be sure they have a lion tag just in case they spot one and can harvest it. ^^^^^^^^^^^ That's just a few things off the top of my head that I have learned from the lay of the land.
