Edge Report post Posted July 26, 2017 There are several sections where it goes thru wilderness areas...no bikes allowed. I thought mountain bikes are allowed but no motorized bikes but I could be wrong. No bikes
kimberx2 Report post Posted July 26, 2017 Technically, you can remove the wheels from your mountain bike and carry it, or back pack it, across the wilderness sections, to connect your routes. But wheels must be removed from frame... So you could bike the entire route, you would just have to pack your bike on the wilderness sections. edit: This is definitely true for Grand Canyon, and use to be true around 2000, when i did a lot of bikepacking. But, I am not seeing any confirmation of this on the web right now.

bojangles Report post Posted July 27, 2017 There are several sections where it goes thru wilderness areas...no bikes allowed. There is an arizona trail mountain bike race each year. it's a pretty legendary deal. currently, the race routes around the wilderness areas, however, there is current legislation to allow bikes to use the trail, and other trails in wilderness areas. hopefully this law passes. MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted July 27, 2017 My horse crapping is not against the law. Pretty juvenile to point that out. People who don't regularly use wilderness areas often say this bike thing should pass but these areas were set aside so they would be untouched and untaimed, ounce the bikes get in there now it will be a zoo everywhere. There are enough great rides in the world and no reason to ruin a good thing for a minority group
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted July 27, 2017 Man, this really just gets me torqued, I can't believe people would really want to destroy some of the last clean quiet and free of retards places , I guess some won't be happy until it's all gone and roads right into everything. Sounds really crappy to me There should be more locked up areas not less.

knothead Report post Posted July 27, 2017 Here is a list of people who have completed the trail. My Dad completed it in 2009. His name is George Hay http://www.aztrail.org/finishers.html I think he told me he rode across the Grand Canyon 7 different times. Once for himself and the rest to help others. He made a ton of friends on that trail. Even though I don't ride anymore I am glad there are still places where only boots and hooves can go. Once it is gone, it will be gone forever. There are plenty of other places for wheeled sports.

I just would love to be able to explore these areas the way I want, just like you do. Your mode of transportation is a horse my way involves tires. I live in a equestrian area and get tired of horses constantly leaving a pile at the end of my driveway and the owners just leave it. We each have our own way of enjoying the outdoors. bojangles Report post Posted July 27, 2017 Mr jangle and tac are off my xmas list lol. a bicycle does far less eco damage than a horse, everybody knows that. if they open the wilderness areas up to bikes, it's not going to be like you think it is. it won't be crowded and such. What it will do is allow people who can't afford/don't have horses to get back in there a bit. bikes are quiet and minimalist, much more so than pack animals. we're not talking about downhill, "slopestyle" trails like what's found at ski resorts and such, but long distance bike packing trails. bikepacking is a challenge in it's own right, much more physically demanding than riding on a horse or hiking. plus, bikes don't normally leave giant piles of poo in the trail. this is bike packing, much of which involves hiking with a bike.
