21 December Rifle Mule Deer

My brother in law got lucky and drew this late December 21 mule deer tag with 1 point! I've hunted it one time in November and have a buddy who has also hunted it on the November general rifle hunt. Anyone have this tag in the last year or two? What should we hold out for? I'm thinking anything that looks mature, 160ish and over should probably be tagged. Am I thinking right here?

 

I'm planning on looking as much as I can get out, but we probably won't get serious till around Christmas when the rut is going good. I don't imagine finding a buck will be hard, just finding one of decent size.

Definitely a good tag to have especially without OTC archery. We head out to 21 every January to hunt deer and get into the mulies. There are some good bucks in there. With only ten tags you will have your pick.

The average buck killed on that hunt is 130-140". Having said that if a guy does his homework a guy could kill a 170"+.

Right on guys, good to hear. He's never hunted before so this should be a good hunt for him. I think he'll be hooked after this.

 

 

I'm planning on passing a lot of bucks until we see what he likes.

There was a fire in that area a week ago, the Brooklyn Fire I believe. I'm not sure how extensively it burned.

I was at Joes hill this evening and the fire burned all of joes hill and Perry mesa. I would look elsewhere..areas I would look would be seven springs, Bartlett lake rd. Good luck.

Quite a bit of that area burned. I was working up there and it was a sea of fire.
