Newbie Rifle Choices

Recommended Posts

Rudy,

I say a .308 bolt action. Low recoil, usually very accurate. Most factory rifles are light to carry.

More than enough for any deer/hog and enough for elk should he decide to head west.

If you get a 1:10 twist barrel you can shoot 180 grain SST or similar. I shoot the 178 out my 1:12 just fine but factory ammo might be a little more finicky on twist.

You can buy .308 ammo at any Texas gas station, Walmart etc, coffee shop...etc

Agreed, .308

Why not shop some used guns and see what you can find. With a little shopping you should be able to find a better quality rifle / scope combination for the money.

Something used definitely will be in consideration depending on what is available. Found him a Zeiss Terra 4-12x50 for a smoking deal that will leave about $450ish for a rifle.

I did find a new T3 lite in .308 for $499 so I'm gonna see if he can stretch it out.

whatever he gets he is going to need to spend some time and money determining which ammo shoots best in his gun. it is amazing how accurate/inaccurate rifles are with different ammo. At $30 a box it is a tough pill to swallow but worth every penny.

cant beat a 270. lots of "noise" recently on the 6.5 CM but factory ammo options are limited. Personally a 300 win mag with a good recoil pad would be an excellent choice.

Snagged a Sig Whiskey 3 3-9x with illuminated reticle for under $200... eyeing a new Tikka T3 Lite in .270 to make it an even $700 total. Gotta get him to 'pull' the trigger.
