Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 9, 2017 I would try that Norma load with the 130 Scirocco and see if your rifle likes it. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/914211/norma-usa-american-ph-ammunition-65-creedmoor-130-grain-swift-scirocco-ii-box-of-20 The Hornady 143 eldx shoots well in my 6.5 Creedmoor
Zeke-BE Report post Posted July 9, 2017 Hornady makes great rounds. I shoot the ELDx and would not hesitate to shoot the ELDm either (which are Amax's with a new tip) I've (only) read and watched results with Amax and ELD's perform well! Plus they have really good BC and expand better than other rounds at slower speeds, where I heard of other rounds just pencil through at slower speeds (not all but enough to make me concern). I haven't see as of yet anyone with bad results with a well place bullet with Amax's and ELDs
cjl2010 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 Don't be afraid of trying 130-140 bergers as well
lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 9, 2017 A 6.5 CM should work on elk if you put a properly constructed bullet where it needs to go. 6.5x55 have been killing moose and red stags for years. That being said, it would not be my personal choice for an elk round.
forepaw Report post Posted July 9, 2017 Can't understand why there is not more support for the Barnes 127 LRX. You can start it faster from a relatively small case like the 6.5 CM or 6.5x55. I understand this gets into the no man's land between speed (and remaining energy) and B.C., but at long range, the question becomes not only ability to buck wind, but also stability in the trans sonic zone, where a little wobble starts while the bullet is still supersonic. I don't know how to predict where the advantage will be except to shoot both bullets in the wind at a reasonable range, say 500 yds. Get ready for an educational but humbling experience! I didn't agree with Van Zwoll's use of the 6.5 CM to shoot a bull at 600 yds. as I considered it a publicity stunt intended to sell rifles. But I understand that he is a highly experienced hunter and a cool shot. He was able to pull it off under perfect conditions (private, open land, no wind, no angle, calm animals). Not everyone will have those perfect conditions or could otherwise make the same shot under field conditions. If anything goes wrong - anything - will you be able to send in another EFFECTIVE follow up shot (or two, or three) before the animal gets away? forepaw
Jnj13 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 A 6.5 CM should work on elk if you put a properly constructed bullet where it needs to go. This is pretty much my thoughts too. I haven't seen any data that says it won't do the job. Since my 14 yr old son is the hunter we both like the 6.5CM over the 300 mag. Also weighs 5 pounds less. Plan is to get a couple boxes of ammo and see if I can get a better group or comparable with a little heavier than the 120 hornadys. Forepaw- agree about the long range shots. Don't intend to take a sketchy shot no matter what. I'm no expert on ballistics but the 3 bullets suggested at 400 yards * speed/energy Hornady 120 superformance 2249/1347 Hornady 143 ELD-X 2156/1476 Norma 130 2160/1363 Bergers * can't find any data compared to the 300 win mag 2197/1607 in the 150 grain hornady. Hoss50 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 For the 300 win mag you should be looking to shooting heavier bullets IMO. To take advantage of the round to me you need 190gr+. I am working with 208gr ELD-M in my 300 win mag.
azelkhunter69 Report post Posted July 12, 2017 No reason to beat a kid up with a .300 Win Mag. heck, I wouldn't choose one either. The 6.5 is more than enough. My kids all grew up hunting elk with a .243 Win. and a .257 Roberts. Both shooting 100 gr. bullets. There have been a lot of elk killed with a .243. Also, I believe there is too much emphasis on the long range aspect. I've seen a lot of elk killed and the longest shot was probably about 125 yards. It's an age old argument. Shoot what you shoot well and hit them in the right spot. The last part should go for any caliber or bullet size.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 13, 2017 I'm mostly an archery hunter and have heard so much lately on this 6.5. I was impressed with the videos here. My wife injured her shoulder really bad a couple years ago and she is afraid to shoot a rifle now. She is afraid she will dislocate her shoulder again. What do you think about her shooting a 25.06 on this year's cow elk hunt. How does it compare to the 6.5? Her shot will be 75yrds from a blind hopefully. Thanks for your input.. TJ 6.5 creedmoor should have better recoil than the 25.06, but the 25 will knock down an elk no probs especially from 75 yds away

Hoss50 Report post Posted July 15, 2017 25-06 will get it done too. Get a good bullet and hit it right. I used a 257 weatherby a few years ago on my cow elk hunt. 280 yards and no problem. I used 115gr Berger HVLD bullets.
Huntnfish Report post Posted July 16, 2017 Yep, killed 5 cows in last 6 years with a 25-06. 100 to 350 yds. Farthest one went about 25 yds, and most dropped on the spot. 115 grain hvld.
ctracingraptor Report post Posted July 17, 2017 I shot my cow elk last year at 100 yards with my creedmoor, she only went two steps on a ELD, ended up with a heart shot
